Creative destruction – The Daily PPILL #114

Important transformational work is often tied to doing away with the existing Status Quo.

Incremental change, the kind that tweaks and optimizes the existing order, can be done without major upheaval. Adding a feature here, making something better there; that doesn’t require to throw away what we had before. This happens both in software, systems, politics, religion, family and anything that goes on in the world. My current favorite is the home remodel. There is quite a range of things that we can change in a house with some significant impact, without even having to get a build permit. New flooring, change some of the furniture, paint the walls, etc.

But when it comes to major, foundational changes, most of the time the current order gets in our way. And we have to rip it out. The complete software rewrite, tearing down that dividing wall between the living room and the dining room, rip out the whole cabinetry, etc. There is no transformational change possible without destruction.

Even the farmer has to tear up the ground before planting the next crop.

If you expect transformational change, be prepared to let go of some of the things that you became used to.
