??Creativ Brief: Why Rebrands Cost So Much

We’re a small enterprise company and even our rebrand is expensive.?

One might think a rebrand is a simple logo and name change? It’s so much more.

A rebrand should extend into every aspect of your business, from the logo to the sales materials to packaging to office decals to company swag to the mission statement to how one talks about the company.?

Below, I outline an ordered checklist of all the tasks that should go into a rebrand. Doing it right will provide solid foundations for a firm to build upon.?

  • A messaging hierarchy, as we spoke about in a previous post
  • Competitive research for your target market?
  • A customer segmentation and identification
  • Naming, trademarkable, unique, and explanatory of position.?
  • Logo mark and word mark.?
  • Trademark filings with the USPTO
  • Brand guidelines design document, incorporating messaging, logos, and naming
  • Company presentation deck design?
  • Video Launch asset - the higher production value the better
  • Social banners and iconography (Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, X, TikTok)
  • Physical banner design and ordering
  • Company merchandise or swag ordered
  • Business cards and sales materials
  • Press release with announcement?
  • PR plan to specific press, podcasts, outlets, panels
  • Launch material like a research paper or PR stunt, brand dependent?
  • Launch event with customers in the target market. We’re doing ThinkLA AI brunch and Campaign Convene.
  • General company materials updates - contracts, legal documents, employee handbooks, etc.?

The professionals needed to carry out the comprehensive rebrand include, designers, copywriters, research, strategy, legal, video production, public relations, and project management to keep everything in order.?

Our rebrand launches on February 18th.?

3 Stories Dominating Media and Tech Headlines

China counters with tariffs on US products. It will also investigate Google. China has announced retaliatory tariffs against American imports, directly in response to the sweeping 10% tariffs placed on Chinese products by the U.S. President Donald Trump. In addition, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation announced that it would be investigating Google on suspicion of violating their nation’s anti-trust laws.

Why it matters: China’s retaliatory tariffs are a direct response to previous tariffs placed on all Chinese products entering The United States. The escalating trade war will create downstream price increases for consumers. China’s investigation of Google seems to be a byproduct as well, given the timing of the announcement just a few minutes after Trump’s 10% tariffs on China took effect.

OpenAI's new trademark application hints at humanoid robots, smart jewelry, and more. AI startup OpenAI filed new applications for the patenting of products associated with the “OpenAI” brand - while this is not an out-of-the-ordinary for a company to trademark products ahead of the time, some of the listed patents give a good indication of products and concepts OpenAI will be toying with down the road.

Why it matters:? OpenAI’s patent application shows they’re planning to expand the range of products under the “OpenAI” banner, from day-to-day tech products to innovative technologies like life-assisting robots designed to operate with human-like intelligence in real-world environments. While the wide range of patents doesn’t provide a clear direction the company plans on going down, this move gives them cover to proceed in specific directions and diversify their technological portfolio.

Meta Platforms (META) to Spend $20 Billion on Virtual Reality in 2025. Meta double-downs on its smart glasses, planning to spend $20 billion on augmented reality and virtual reality technologies this year alone. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that 2025 will be a “defining year” for smart glasses.

Why it matters: With Meta’s most recent investment, the tech juggernaut will have surpassed $100 billion into their virtual reality initiatives.? Recent sales of the smart glasses only reached $2.1 billion, with analysts curious about if this investment will actually pay off. However, this $17.7 billion loss doesn’t seem to be stopping Meta in any way, with their stock rising 54% of the past year and the tech giant sticking to their guns in the unproven technologies department.
