If this book were to be written and published in 2017, there would be a few more chapters and pages which mention the buzz words “Sharing Economy”. If you recall, during 2016–2017, you did not need to look too far away from your house to notice that almost every street in Singapore had bicycles owned by various bike-sharing companies. Somehow, they were short-lived and now that we are in 2019, quite a few of these bike-sharing companies have ran into cash flow issues and gone bankrupt. So, are we still sharing among ourselves?
In the EstateEconomy? Business Model, the definition of a Sharing Economy has, on the one hand, widened to include not only economic activities but also time for emotional and physical support which are neither measurable in monetary terms nor quantifiable in the number of hours involved. This is the kampung spirit found in each estate. On the other hand, the definition has narrowed to the sharing of resources among neighbours mainly within one single home estate. That is what I call Estate-Sharing-Economy. While the Estate-Sharing-Economy is about the sharing of resources within one estate, the Estate-Social-Media platform mentioned in the previous chapter is referring to the communication among neighbours within one estate.
The added definition of time being shared for emotional and physical support in my version of Sharing Economy is happening because the people involved are neighbours living within the same home estate. The “one home estate” concept is nothing to do with neighbours being selfish and not willing to share with the people in other estates. It is about the sharing of resources within every estate. It is about the relationships among neighbours.
To answer the question posed in the first paragraph, are we all still sharing in the sharing economy? The answer is yes, in the EstateEconomy?, as I have created a closed-knit community which are your neighbours living in the same estate. With the help of the Estate-Social-Media-Platform for individual estates, I have triggered communication of a new kind via digital means (mobile app) and physical means (living in the same home estate). This will help form the basic relationship needed for the Estate-Sharing-Economy in every home estate. And it is with the inclusion of this last Estate-Services platform of the five that formed the EstateEconomy?.
It seems comprehensive if you look at the Diagram above. But something is missing from the EstateEconomy?. And that is the question I have posed in the next chapter.
