Creating Unique Store Experiences

Creating Unique Store Experiences

Welcome back to Replenish, the must-read monthly newsletter by the Retailers Association of India. This month witnessed a thrilling development in the retail industry. 苹果 , a company historically known for only selling their products through third-party electronics stores and e-commerce sites, opened not one but two Apple stores in India.

So, why should we explore these Apple stores? The primary reason is the unparalleled experience they offer. While Apple's premium products are available for purchase across multiple platforms, the retail experience offered in their stores truly sets them apart. So much so, that when you encounter a similar experience elsewhere, your first thought is – they've emulated the Apple store magic.

The press release for the Mumbai Apple store highlights an event called "Mumbai Rising" which celebrates the city's vibrant culture through a series of engaging sessions:

  1. Music Lab: Deep Listening in Urban Spaces with Sandunes
  2. Photo Lab: Portraits of Resistance with Prarthna Singh
  3. Design Lab: Every Poster Tells a Story with Boomranng Studio
  4. Art Lab: Drawing Homage to Mumbai with Kohla

The Saket store in New Delhi offers a comparable line-up of interactive workshops:

  1. Skills: Getting Started with iPhone
  2. Tips: Edit Your Photos on iPhone
  3. Art Lab for Kids: Make Your Own Emoji
  4. Skills: Personalising Your Apple Watch
  5. Tips: Capture Ideas on iPad

Apple has made these workshops available to everyone, free of charge. This inclusive approach allows customers who own older Apple products to enter the store and, over the course of two hours, learn how to create stunning images reminiscent of the "Shot on iPhone" billboards that grace our streets during product launches.

By offering these remarkable experiences, Apple has elevated the retail game - blending education, entertainment, and customer engagement to create a truly unique and unforgettable encounter.

Store Experiences and Brand Resonance

Exceptional customer experiences aren't solely associated with Apple. Retailers across various industries strive to captivate customers and foster loyalty through unique offerings.

Reflecting on the recently concluded Hyderabad Retail Summit, organized by RAI and presented by RATNADEEP RETAIL PRIVATE LIMITED , we can see another example of this principle in action. Our gifting partner, Skandhanshi Retail Private Limited Beauty&Beyond, set up a kiosk at the summit featuring an innovative machine that not only calculates one's weight but also measures body fat, muscle mass, and other factors to determine overall body health. The startup is bound to be remembered for this distinctive experience, creating strong brand resonance and setting it apart from competitors.

Innovative Disruptions in Experience Design

Another inspiring example of brand recall comes from Subway's campaign in London last year. They showcased interactive 3D billboards that allowed pedestrians to create their own sandwiches virtually. Upon completing their customized creation, a Subway ambassador would approach and present the real version of the sandwich. This immersive and engaging experience left a lasting impression on customers, showcasing the power of innovative disruptions in experience design.

Embracing Non-Tech-Based Customer Experiences

While technology is often at the forefront of innovative customer experiences, some retailers continue to excel through non-tech-based approaches. At the Retail India Summit and Expo (RISE) held in New Delhi last year, Rochita Dey, the Director at Kolkata-based Sreeleathers Footwear , highlighted how their store experience capitalizes on the bustling energy of Durga Puja sales.

This phenomenon is not unique to Sreeleathers. Traditional shoe stores in busy markets across Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bengaluru often showcase a flurry of boxes containing footwear being tossed around during peak season. Amidst this visual spectacle, skilled sales staff manage to catch the exact box needed for a customer. This captivating experience, albeit not tech-enabled, still stands out as a distinct store attraction.

As we delve deeper into the realm of unique store experiences in India, it's essential to recognize the impact of personalization and immersive elements on customer interactions. By offering tailored experiences that cater to shoppers' preferences and interests, Indian retailers can create lasting impressions that encourage customer loyalty.

A prime example of personalized store experiences can be found in the Indian fashion industry. Numerous brands, both large and small, provide personal shopping services where customers are paired with a stylist who helps them curate the ideal wardrobe based on their unique style and preferences. This attentive and customized approach not only enhances the shopping experience but also increases the likelihood of customers making a purchase and returning for more.

Another aspect of a memorable store experience is the incorporation of immersive elements that engage customers on multiple sensory levels. For instance, Nykaa , the popular Indian cosmetics brand, is known for its unique in-store experience that stimulates the senses. From the moment customers step into the store, they are greeted by an explosion of colours, scents, and textures, all of which contribute to an engaging and unforgettable shopping experience. By offering customers the opportunity to see, touch, and smell products up close, retailers like Nykaa create a memorable experience that goes beyond a simple transaction.

The key to a successful store experience in India lies in understanding and catering to the needs and desires of the customer. By offering personalized and immersive experiences, Indian retailers can create an unforgettable shopping journey that not only generates brand loyalty but also sets them apart from their competition.
