Creating a Top Training Environment
Many of us have attended training in some fabulous places and equally some fairly dismal places! The environment in which training takes place, plays a critical part in the success of the training intervention.
When learners are comfortable in an environment, they are more likely to participate more fully and therefore gain more benefit from attending.
Creating a top training environment depends on the type of training intervention. For example, if the training course is a technical IT course, then PCs, access to appropriate hardware and software, internet and other technical resources may be required. However, if the intervention is a workshop on a business skills or personal development topic, the resources required may be much simpler.
Whatever the intervention, the number of learners, the budget, the learners preferences should be considered and planned for, where possible.
The majority of the training that we deliver would be perfect delivered in an environment with the following:
- Comfortable seating with desks in a horseshoe to enable movement around the room for the trainer, and visibility for all towards the front where the visual aids are.
- Integrated audio visual equipment, for uninterrupted viewing of presentation and video. No wire hazards either (Health & Safety!!)
- Minimum 2 flipcharts or whiteboards, for learner’s use in activities.
- Natural light where possible - and good lighting where it’s not - Scotland can be a little dark all year round!
- Air conditioning and heating controls for the room
- On site technical assistance before and during the intervention.
- Internet connection to support delivery if required
- Break out rooms for practical exercises, providing “safe” areas to practice skills
- Refreshment area out of the room, preferably with seating.
- Toilet facilities near the room, to reduce time out of the intervention
