Creating A Sustainable Wedding A Few Thoughts – Flowers
It is just two weeks to go before the Sustainable Wedding Alliance Awards where we are finalists in the Sustainable by Design category. Mr F and I are both excited about the ceremony, but more importantly are just so proud and happy that we are in the final. It is such an honour and achievement to be there amongst some other amazing finalists. But also, and very importantly, it is the fact that our work has been recognised for its contribution to sustainable weddings. A fundamental part of our work is to create sustainable alternatives for couples and to help develop a different conversation about how weddings and sustainability can work together with ease.
A focus for us is, of course, about our sustainable favours and other accessories. But our wider view is about gently offering alternatives that can be introduced into the wedding planning and day without losing all the bits that make the day super special for the couple.
When planning a wedding, some things can be easily swapped to offer sustainable elements. For example the flowers. These are a joyful statement that can really speak a thousand words about the day; but where do they come from? How are they grown, what pesticides and chemicals are used? How many miles have they been transported to reach the florist?
Choosing a florist who is committed to using locally grown, seasonal flowers that have been grown with careful consideration for the environment offers couples a great opportunity to include a sustainable swap that adds colour, texture and joy to their day.
Flowers From the Farm is a UK based award-winning membership association for artisan cut flower growers in the UK. They have members from across the UK and the directory on their website lists these and shares details of what they offer.
Flowers at weddings provide a colourful accompaniment to the day, from a simple handtied posy for the bride to lavish displays adorning the venue all make a statement about the couple and their special day.
This year, we are committed to developing relationships with florists and flower growers who share our values and beliefs. Our hope is that we can create some supportive collaborations bringing together our favours with their flowers.
