Creating a Successful Time Study

Creating a Successful Time Study

Ask an Industrial Engineer:

How do I complete a successful Time Study?

To complete a time study, the following basic requirements will help you have a successful result:

Determining the goal and the boundaries of the study: Do we intend to speed up the process??Remove wasteful movements? Both??Once the focus of the study is determined, then you need to outline the process you will be studying and if there is any existing data.

Find a trained and experienced person to observe the process:?Industrial engineers have the experience necessary to perform a time study properly.?(IMEG has resources to assist!)

Measuring Equipment:?A simple stopwatch and a time study sheet is typically used but be careful to observe workers that may be putting in more effort than normal since they are being watched.?A more discreet method of observing may be necessary.

Determine a proper sample size: A good sample size will give you a good representation of the work.?Also be careful not to utilize your top performers in the study.

Properly choose the time:?Chose a time that represents a more general workflow of the facility.?Avoid periods of peak seasons for example.

Love these bits of information on completing a successful time study! Another tip I would like to add is once the goals of the study are established, review those goals with the whole team involved to ensure everyone understands why the study is being completed. This is especially important to review with those who are being studied. This will lead to overall understanding, engagement, and support from all involved.
