Creating a Scalable Framework for Puzzle Levels
In tonight's edition, we have a featured blog on puzzle game design and programming, alongside plenty of news from the likes of Riot Games, the Video Game History Foundation, Microsoft, and more.
From the beginning this project wasn't just about the final product. I wanted to learn better practices for scalable and maintainable code.
Of course levels in a puzzle game aren’t any good unless they have corresponding rules that you have to follow in order to solve the puzzle. In Islands of Insight these rules are relatively straightforward and given to you on the right of your screen with helpful images. In Understand however, these rules are intentionally hidden from you. The only information Understand gives you is how many rules you have to follow, and the only feedback it gives you is which rules you are currently breaking. This means that part of the puzzle is just figuring out what the rules are!
The non-profit's Winter Fundraiser 2023 is underway and donations this year are being doubled by sponsors including Studio MDHR and iam8bit.
Games may be Houser's background, but Absurd Ventures is starting off its business outside the medium in favor of graphic novels and a podcast.
Merrill will help establish the individual ecosystems of Riot's games including Valorant, League of Legends, and Teamfight Tactics.
With much of Xbox' playerbase already converted to Game Pass, Microsoft has dreams of taking the service to its distinguished console competitors.
