Technology with its vast benefits definitely should used as tool to create safer cities for all be it men or women of any age, however it's usually women who are victims of sexual crimes like violence, rape or harassment , technology like round the clock monitoring by CCTV cameras can definitely prove as a robust mechanism to create safer environment, however like everything else technology has it pros and cons which needs to be carefully evaluated; few of the pros of this initiative will be that it will surely act as strong deterrent for miscreants at public places, when people know they are being watched they usually behave themselves, at many instances across the county CCTV footages has been extremely effective to nail the culprit much faster which leads to easier conviction, many women we spoke to have expressed their joy on the initiatives as they feel they are not alone especially at secluded places as they feel someone is watching over.
Having said that there is also fair chance for this round the clock monitoring to be misused, a patriarchal society like us where some self declared moral policing organization take pride to be primitive , this can lead to compromising a women right to privacy, I remember an incident where one such video where a couple were kissing at public place landed up on a adult website, also this can lead to implement greater control on women movement and freedom. Another area of concern is effective and live monitoring of footage so that prompt action can be taken when required. Is our control rooms effective and equipped enough to monitor such huge load of visuals, authorities monitoring these videos also needs to be gender sensitive .
Before going ahead with installations of cameras, authorities need to work on strengthening both backend and frontend for effective implementation and monitoring of CCTV cameras while answering all valid concerns raised on infringement of privacy."

8 å¹´Technology will help us only when the society using it take it to their stride with a positive and progressive thoughts. There are always two sides of the coin and the which side to chose deoends solely on the individual. Its better if we collectively use it with a positive and safe mind so that benefits all of us but along with it we need to educate the mass of living happy n peacefully with mutual respect and love for everyone.

8 å¹´Point well made Preeti..!! However, can there be a perfect/best solution to social problems? One has to weigh pros and cons of solutions. In case of CCTV Monitoring, it is my take that Pros outweighs cons.

8 å¹´I suggest that some public park or a morning show be visited to understand the open vulgarity to which couples are stooping and some IDIOTS justifying it in the name of Freedom & Privacy. Prostitution has become rampant and open soliciting including Web Sites are being maintained. There is a need to bring some sort of acceptable public behavior. Regards DSK Rao dskrao65@gmail.com

8 å¹´CCTVs can only serve as Technology enabled Tools to mitigate risks of Sexual Harassment in Public Places... however the most sustainable solution would be the slow and strong one where we take Lead in culturally sensitizing and educating the coming generations on Values and Respect towards all genders.
