From Empowerment to Conviction: Transform Your Leadership Journey
Written by Peter Rost - 13Leaders - Leadership Insights
Psychological safety refers to an environment where individuals feel safe to express their thoughts and take interpersonal risks without fear of negative consequences. This concept is vital for communities as it encourages openness, innovation, and trust among members.
Psychological safety is a critical element in modern leadership. It fosters an environment where team members feel secure enough to voice their ideas, concerns, and mistakes without fear of negative repercussions. This sense of security is essential for cultivating innovation, building trust, and enhancing team performance.
Understanding Psychological Safety
William A. Kahn first introduced the term "psychological safety" in 1990, defining it as feeling able to show and employ oneself without fear of negative consequences to self-image, status, or career (Agile Alliance |) (BioMed Central). Amy Edmondson further expanded on this concept, emphasising its importance in team settings, particularly in high-stakes and innovative environments (Agile Alliance |).

13Leaders Framework Integration
Within the 13Leaders framework, psychological safety is addressed through Assurance (2.2), which emphasises providing safe spaces in the environment. This aspect ensures that leaders create conditions where team members feel secure enough to share their true thoughts and feelings, thereby fostering a collaborative and innovative culture.
By integrating psychological safety into leadership practices, organisations can unlock their teams' full potential, leading to higher engagement, better problem-solving, and continuous growth. However, as we will explore in subsequent sections, it is crucial to balance this with accountability and identity-building to avoid the pitfalls of overemphasis on psychological safety.Unlocking Innovation and Trust with Proven Strategies

There are 3 initial points when it comes to psychological safety: 1. A TEAM has to know where they are heading (vision) and what specific targets they need to reach. A primary LEADERSHIP task! 2. EVERYBODY in the team must show their will and contribute proactively, to move towards agreed targets. (This is not an optional). 3. NOBODY in the team should ask "what's in it for me?" but rather "what else can I give to make us successful!" Only then psychological safety will become a success factor rather than a sole factor of well-being. These kind of safe spaces can only be constructed (by all) rather than instructed by a few.

Are unmet needs, unfulfilled desires and enduring pain the origin of outstanding achievement or rather assured safety, reliable relationships and enduring happiness?
