Creating resilience with Selfcare

As lockdown continues I'm talking to so many people about how they felt at the start of this unprecedented time and how they are feeling as time marches on and lockdown continues, which will no doubt continue for at least a little while yet.

For many, the initial reaction was one of fear, leading in some case initially to anxiety, stress or depression. For some this was a brief feeling and for others those emotions remain to a lesser or greater degree. We are all unique. Our reactions and emotions will be different to the next person and will most likely change over time, and I've seen many of my business associates doing a great job of teaching us about mental health and what we can do at this time.

However, it's not just our mental wellbeing we need to support but our physical wellbeing too. The mind and body are intrinsically linked. Chronic stress has a huge physical impact, and even if we could take away the mental health issues, that doesn't also resolve the physical change in the body that has occurred. It needs its own support.

I've seen lots of online exercise classes, yoga sessions and other activities streamed through video platforms such as YouTube and Vimeo. Exercise can be beneficial, but is only one aspect of physical health, and if we are practising at home it needs to be done safely as well as effectively.

There is so much more to wellbeing and much of it can be delivered through selfcare. We can't currently rely on 1:1 sessions with coaches or support at the local gym from the resident PT, or maybe a massage or other hands-on therapy, but again this is only part of the bigger picture of selfcare.

Selfcare includes a whole host of elements which work synergistically to boost health, increase resilience and promote healing, and you can implement then at home, right now, to help your mind-body wellness.

I am continuing to help individuals, and organisations with employees working from home, to get better at self-care, to improve their general health and increase their resilience, at a time when we need the strongest body we can.

Additionally, I'll be sharing information and supporting those who now realise this is something they need to implement to support and improve their health, or those who are struggling and not able to receive manual therapies and of course those who are just curious... It's never to late to start.

Selfcare is the new healthcare.

Great article, thank you Carolyn Jordan I do hope that self care continues beyond this current period and people can help themselves and stay well and help to ease the ongoing strain on the NHS.

Self care is the new health care is the most poignant statement I have heard during this lockdown. Great article Carolyn.
