Creating a Remote Work Culture

Creating a Remote Work Culture

By Zoe Gelman , Director at Impactual LLC

Impactual has been fully remote for over four years now, and we’ve had to learn how to create a fun, vibrant, and rewarding company culture despite not seeing each other often. This has required intentionality, adaptability, and a bit of creativity. Here’s a few ways we do it:

  1. Keep the Chat Flowing: Slack, Teams, Zoom, Signal — whatever works! Ensure your communication channels are clear and encourage open dialogue, feedback, and transparency to keep everyone connected and informed.
  2. Create Informal Spaces: Look for opportunities to recreate the water-cooler. Schedule virtual coffee breaks (or tea time) and maybe even a game of Codenames. Set up a Slack channel for sharing a great recipe, photos of your furry friends, and updates on that friend of a friend’s most recent drama. These spaces foster organic interactions, creativity, and a bit of joy.
  3. Balance is Key: Remote work can blur the boundaries between work and personal life. Set boundaries, take breaks, and prioritize self-care. At Impactual, we check in and check out daily, which allows for team members to both know when you’re reachable, and when to respect your time away from work.
  4. Grow Together: Provide (and take advantage of) opportunities for continuous learning and development. Online courses, workshops, coaching, or even book clubs are great ways to learn together, enhance skills, and stay motivated.
  5. Check in (and Keep Checking in): Schedule regular one-on-one check-ins to discuss progress, challenges, and goals. Having a consistent touchpoint with team members provides an opportunity to offer support, guidance, and recognition.
  6. Commit to Improvement: Continuously seek feedback on what's working well and what can be improved.
