Creating a purpose-driven workplace and cultivating growth

In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, the role of Human Resources (HR) has transcended its traditional boundaries, encompassing much more than just employee compliance. It is a dynamic field that has the potential to transform organisations by helping individuals find their purpose, fostering engagement, and unleashing their full potential.

To shed light on the transformative power of HR, we had the privilege of sitting down with Shelley Johnson , an exceptional professional from Boldside , whose extensive journey in HR has redefined its archetypal connotation. Through our enlightening conversation, we delved into the essence of HR, discovering how it can be a catalyst for growth, development, and ultimately, the success of both individuals and businesses.

Shelley started her career in a large not-for-profit, as a youth worker, into a rostering role, HR admin and advisory roles to primarily leading the HR teams.?Through her extensive experience, Shelley witnessed first-hand that Human Resources isn’t just about employee compliance.?It’s more about how an organisation can help their people find their purpose and feel more engaged where money isn’t their main driver.

The thought of meeting with the HR department (outside of starting a new job) can instil fear in some, like visiting the principal’s office.?Whilst people are the biggest cost to a business, they can be the biggest asset when you help them grow. Growing, developing and kicking goals simultaneously, can be the best outcome for all.

Revel in the uniqueness of each employee

Doing the same old thing doesn’t bring joy or value to an individual, let alone a business.

Leaders need to grow and get the best out of their people.?These people aren’t necessarily the same as them – it’s that familiarity bias where we tend to gravitate towards what is comfortable, but what feels comfortable doesn't necessarily continue growth in a business.

“Leaders need to create the environment of simultaneous safety and stretch”.

There are HR challenges such as attracting talent – where have all the good people gone??They are probably already working with good leaders who provide good benefits.?Such leaders find growth opportunities for their employees. They give them flexibility and autonomy because they trust their employees will meet the expectations set. Finding ways to coach, mentor and grow them is the biggest retention hook. Quite often, it is culture and leadership that determines if a person stays or leaves a company.???

Improve and invest in the culture of your business and your people.

A business can celebrate with those who are performing to the set expectations.?For those members who aren’t meeting the expectations, leaders need to be able to have challenging conversations to ensure the correct culture is intact and the team is truly a team.?

Growth happens at the intersection of challenge and support.

We certainly appreciated some education on how to create a better HR environment in the workplace.?For further guidance, you are welcome to get in touch with Shelley Johnson at Boldside Consulting through LinkedIn.

We have a 2 Recruiters 1 Mic podcast episode on this very topic that you can listen to here.
