Creating a positive hiring experience in engineering

We recently caught up with Jake Wilson , our Head of Talent, on how he creates a positive hiring process for candidates and future teammates, focusing on the field of engineering. Read on for a few of his insights.

What is Wagestream’s hiring process like and what makes it a positive experience?

"if you're investing the time, we’re right there with you."

Above everything else, I'd say that we respect our candidates' time, that’s why we ensure our process is streamlined but efficient. The total process takes roughly 2 ? hours, which we believe is a sufficient amount of time to make an accurate assessment, as well as offering our candidates a thorough insight into our culture and practices.

We endeavour to keep the gap between stages to a maximum of three days, and we don't do remote tasks for engineers; if you're investing the time, we’re right there with you.

Candidates get to meet the technical thought-leaders of the business, including our Co-Founder & CTO, VP of Engineering and Engineering Directors, as well as team members, to give them a well-rounded view of our culture and set-up.?

All interviewers are trained on the advantages of diverse teams to counter the “just like me” bias. We always provide feedback with rationale explaining the decision, and the team is always on hand to talk through technical feedback and answer any remaining questions candidates have.?

What’s one tip you'd give to engineers applying to Wagestream?

"In short, come prepared."

In short, come prepared. Technical skills are not everything. We’re an extremely mission-led business; everyone believes in what we’re trying to achieve. Get?the basics right, and showcase that you’re informed on Wagestream and the role you’re applying for.?

Communication is important, we value opinions, but make sure you have rational evidence to back it up. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable, if you don’t know, be honest.?

Why should an engineer aspire to work for Wagestream??

"We’ve grown junior engineers into managers and even to C-suite leadership."?

You will get to work on a broad range of disruptive products that have a real social impact, positively affecting the lives of millions - everything we do and every product we create is designed to improve the financial wellbeing of people in work and tackle the poverty premium. And we’re a B-Corp employer, so we mirror the high standards we’re striving to embed, industry wide.?

You will operate in a product engineering environment, having end-to-end involvement and influence on the products you deliver. We offer a chance to work from conception, through to build, release and iteration, as well as on internationally-scaled products that host millions of users, utilising a broad range of modern technologies, and getting to select what’s right for the job.?

We support a meritocracy ethos, which is evident by the volume of success stories across the team. We’ve grown junior engineers into managers and even to C-suite leadership.?

From a junior to mid-level perspective, we have the resources to ensure you get the mentorship and nurture you need to develop; working alongside the highest bar of seasoned engineers on a multitude of different projects from greenfield through to internationally scaled products, giving you exposure to a wide range of problems.?
