Creating personalized learning experiences

Creating personalized learning experiences

Everyone has their own unique learning preferences.

And, while many restrictive designs are underpinned by valid principles... the one-size-fits-all approach does not help to construct an optimal learning environment.

How can we create an environment where there is autonomy over the learning experience, without compromising the impact of the learning itself?

If you're anything like me, I like to decide what to learn first. So, being restricted like the example below doesn't really make me feel excited about the journey I'm about to start.

However, when we create freedom - we provide learners with room to explore and discover, like in this example:

How to build personalised learning?

STEP 1: Let learners choose how and when they wish to learn

Design an experience that has ample opportunities for learners to make choices in their learning journey.

Tip 1: Chunk the content into smaller digestible sections.

Tip 2: Allow them to navigate freely.

Tip 3: Show section durations to help them plan their time.

STEP 2: Use pre-checks or pre-assessments

Pre-checks are a great way to personalize feedback. Meet the learner "where they are at" based on the assessment outcome. Or, create a motivation to learn by establishing a baseline. Pre-checks help learners to...

  • Acknowledge that there are gaps.
  • Focus on the content that will close the gaps.

Tip 1:

  • If they did well, let them know!
  • If the pre-check didn't go well, don't kill their spirit with your feedback. It's an opportunity to position what they're about to learn and how it will help them.

STEP 3: Use format variety for content supplements and tools

Capitalize on variety! Alternate between formats like video, infographics, podcasts, and interactive lessons to provide additional content.

HOT TIP:

Why not utilize data analytics to determine learner preferences regarding content formats?

The content is the content, right? Any learning program has a mandate. But, how the learning experience is structured is what gives learners a sense of control. Allowing learners to make decisions about their learning experience shapes their motivation to make the most of your program.
