Creating Ourselves Daily: Dynamic Focus Part 2
Living is not about discovering ourselves; it is more of an adventure in which we get to journey to different places, states of being, feeling, ways of living and thinking. In that process we shape who we get to be at each part of the journey. In essence, as stated in part one, we create ourselves based on the decisions we make, the courage we do or do not access, the choices we make and the actions we take. In fact, "how" we journey rather than the destinations we reach is the primary way we create ourselves.
I would like to share a few key lessons I have learned in the journeying process of self-creation. First, is the vital importance of having a centering point, of knowing what matters most, of being clear on who we want to become and how we want to be in this world. This is of critical importance not only for individuals, but also for families, teams, organizations and communities. The most powerful way to form that center based on my forty (40) plus years of working with people is defining or outlining a core sense of Purpose. It is like having both a compass for orienting as well as a good backpack in which to carry what is most essential on the journey of life.
My core purpose, for example, was something I came to after months of soul-searching, reflecting on powerful growth experiences that included in their number great pain as well as joy, successes as well as failures. My centering mechanism as created, "I work to come from my deepest heart and to invite all I meet to come from theirs so that we can be our whole, best selves." This sense of purpose has provided guidance, direction, insight and many chances for self-correction for more than thirty years now. It has helped to shape and create my growth internally as well as how I show up in life and in relating to others.
Creating ourselves the way we want to be in the world is an on-going, daily set of choices, decisions and actions. An essential part of doing this well is to clearly outline and define what we choose as our center of gravity, our key orientation. Knowing this center helps us to make choices that keep shaping who we are, not only in the moment, but our capacity to continue to evolve and become who we wish to be tomorrow. What is your guiding purpose in your journey of self-creation?

8 年Dusty, you are so right! "We create ourselves based on the decisions we make, the courage we do or do not access, the choices we make and the actions we take.†Many years ago I had a wise leader, mentor, and friend say, "Matthew, do you know what the definition of success is?" His explanation has served me throughout my life. His answer was, "Success is a progressive realization of a worthwhile goal or dream." Getting clear on our purpose and what we want to create is so important. Think about it, the first thing a GPS asks you is, "Where are you going?" "What is your destination?" The other Pearl of Wisdom my mentor taught me was, "The true measure of success is when you enjoy the Journey as much as when you get the goodie!" He also wanted to challenge me to as you stated Dusty, to create the Best Me Now, living a life where we are grateful for the Journey and what it teaches us. Many times we get focused on when I get to this level ______or have this outcome ______I'll be a great leader and miss we can be that person now. "Creating ourselves the way we want to be in the world is an on-going, daily set of choices, decisions and actions." Your clarity here helps so many. Your book, The Heart of Leadership: 12 Practices of Courageous Leaders, brilliantly outlines how we go about being a great leader now. The greatest part is you live this message and thus inspire more people than you imagine
