Creating a National Media Moment on Early Childhood Learning

Creating a National Media Moment on Early Childhood Learning

What a day today was! Centre for Policy Development released Growing Together: A future universal early childhood education and care (ECEC) system for Australia. It is the culmination of over 12 months of work to define a universal ECEC system in Australia. The paper proposes 10 key recommendations to enhance accessibility, affordability, and quality, aligning early learning with other universal services like public schooling and Medicare.

We built an impressive coalition to publicly support the report’s findings including: Thrive by Five- Jay Weatherill ); The Parenthood - Georgie Dent (SNAICC the national voice for Aboriginal children – Catherine Liddle ; Fiona Stanley; Impact Economics and Policy and more.

The media coverage of the report today has been extraordinary. We received coverage in every major TV, Radio and Print outlet in Australia (see below) and created a true national public debate. Most importantly, in two interventions today, the Prime Minister publicly supported our report and reiterated his desire for universal ECEC. He was asked directly about our report and welcomed it “as an important contribution to the policy debate” and stated that universal ECEC is “desirable and possible”. In a subsequent public interview, he said that “we [the government] certainly do have ambitions for universal early childhood education” and that it would be a “valued national asset”.?The Federal Treasurer also weighed in with his public support.

Congratulations Andrew Hudson Katherine Oborne & Centre for Policy Development This report is an important contribution to Australia's progress towards high quality universal early childhood education and care. It's never not a thrill to see early childhood education and care front and centre in the national debate - and to have both the Prime Minister & Treasurer weigh in positively is profound.
