Creating momentum
Alan Clarke
Recruitment Trainer, developing people in the recruitment industry through face to face and online video training. My objective is to get you 'RecruiterFit!'
In this ‘RecruiterFit in a minute’ clip I am most certainly NOT demonstrating the hula hoop!
I know my limitations so I’m just being realistic here as I have not mastered in any way shape or form the art of hula hooping. I can eat Hula Hoops (other unhealthy snacks are available) easily but I am probably not the best person to train you on how to hula hoop.
I do know however that this is a good exercise for the core and once you get some momentum going you can do it for hours. Apparently, it’s fun too – not at that stage yet, albeit it does make others laugh when they see me attempt it.
In recruitment, you need to build a strong core and this can include core market knowledge, core recruitment techniques, doing the numbers to pick up momentum and then reap the rewards. FYI - momentum increases when either mass or velocity increase. Boom, that's the science bit!
“Where can you increase mass or velocity?”
One suggestion would be to block out time for your calls, (yep, calls!) create a momentum by doing the same activity for a while, like BD calls, get a rhythm going, build up a head of steam and after a while it will feel easier. It’s even better when others around you join in to create a healthy office buzz. Not many people like to be the only one on the phone.
The hula hoop reminds me of something else I encourage recruiters to do and that is to get your clients and candidates jumping through them. Perhaps you’ve heard the phrase ‘jumping through hoops’. Don’t go by the dictionary definition of this which states “perform a difficult and grueling series of tests at someone else's request or command”.
We are not setting our clients and candidates grueling OR difficult tasks and this may need some education on your part. All we are looking for here is for the clients and candidates to demonstrate some form of commitment to you, to one another and to the process. Without this you will lose momentum as well as placements.
