Creating Modular Poetry For Turn-Based Combat

Creating Modular Poetry For Turn-Based Combat

Battle Poet is a game about mixing and matching lines of poetry in turn-based combat.

Battle Poet

The player selects a line each turn until they have at least two before choosing to recite or wait another turn and add an optional third line.

However, this mechanic needs to be modular. No matter which combination of lines the player chooses, the final poem has to make sense.

Using a random mix of poetry lines leaves coherency up to chance.

I solved this problem with three simple rules:

  1. The first line always defines a subject (who is acting.)
  2. The second line always defines an object (who/what is being acted on.)
  3. The (optional) third line always provides context.

So long as I stick to this template, the grammar of the lines will not contradict.

The final poem makes sense!

Brilliant! I don't think I've ever seen a game like this. Were there any particular games that inspired the project?
