Creating the MLB Version of "My Cause, My Cleats"
The National Football League (NFL) really nailed it by allowing players to advertise the causes they support on their cleats, which has been going strong for several years. And while Major League Baseball (MLB) supports a number of causes and celebrations (breast cancer prevention, Mother's Day, etc.) by inserting colors into the standard uniforms, they need to find their own initiative allowing the players to highlight their own personal movements.
Here's an idea: Support My Socks.
We're starting to see more and more baseball players go old school and show off their socks by hiking them up to their knees (like Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Bryson Stott). Let's find some artists to design the players' socks in the team colors with designs that support either their personal charities or a charity close to them. Then, see if Fanatics , the official uniform supplier for MLB can sell the socks most of the proceeds going back to that specific charity. Fanatics has been catching heat for the uniforms this year, and this can show their commitment to the players and the causes closes to them.
The socks idea would create a better marketing play for baseball and, given the duration of the season, it's something MLB could do several times a year. Shoot me a DM, Major League Baseball (MLB) and let's get this off the ground.
