Creating mini forests in Punjab | New home for Green Pigeons

Indrajeet Singh, a 75-year-old farmer from Patiala, was surprised one day when he heard the distinct sweet chirping of green pigeons, also called?hariyal?in India, at his home. The sound was coming from the ?-acre mini forest he has built on his land with the help of RoundGlass Foundation. He ran towards the forest to spot them and there they were — not one but a pair of?hariyals! The winged guests stayed at the mini forest for three hours, he tells us excitedly.

Hariyals make their nests on tall trees and survive on food from the trees and water droplets on the leaves and branches. And they have the sweetest chirp.?They’ve been making our mini forests in Punjab their home, thanks to the wide variety of trees which they can source their food from.

RoundGlass Foundation?has been creating mini forests in the villages of Punjab since 2019. The initiative is led by Dr. Rajneesh Verma, a biotechnologist with a Ph.D. in plant technology.?In this?film, shot by ace filmmaker?Gurvinder Singh, Dr. Rajneesh takes us to the first?RoundGlass Foundation?mini forest, planted?in 2019 at Badoshi Kalan village.?Today, it’s a lush wood that’s home to a variety of butterflies, bees, small animals, and?birds like the hariyal.

These?mini forests are created on the principles of the Patch Concept — when clusters of the same variety of trees are planted together, they grow as a community, shooting up tall and healthy.?

RoundGlass Foundation has planted more than 500 mini forests in the villages of Punjab. We are on a journey to plant ONE BILLION TREES in the state. Punjab needs regreening and restoration of its green cover, which is severely depleted and amongst the lowest in the country, at 3.67% of land area.
