Creating a Meaningful Future
Choosing Your Best Destination
Do you know where you’re going? This is always a pertinent question and it’s especially relevant during uncertain times. So, let’s take a moment to think about the future.
We can start by asking if you have a crystal-clear vision of where you intend to be in twelve months’ time. Do have a clearly-defined set of goals for the next five years? Have you set a precise date for the completion of your goals? Can you see yourself celebrating your accomplishments and reaping the rewards of your success?
These are well-recognised methods for harnessing the power of the imagination and engaging our subconscious resources in the pursuit of well-defined goals. But there’s another element in this equation and it’s something that’s often overlooked. Can you guess what it is?
You will find that it is necessary to let things go, simply for the reason that they are heavy. So, let them go, let go of them. I tie no weights to my ankles.

If you really aspire to create a future that satisfies all of your dreams and ambitions, then it is absolutely essential to let go of the past. Does it seem strange to mention the past when we’ve just acknowledged the importance of focusing on the future? There’s a good reason for this.
Whilst it’s vitally important to create goals for ourselves and design a future that fulfils our requirements for success and self-expression, we need to ensure that we do not remain trapped in the familiar lair of the past. Let’s consider this concept more closely.
Our experience of the past only exists through the medium of our memories. And our memories are not as reliable as we’d like to imagine. Our memories provide a place where we can relive everything we’ve ever experienced. The challenge with this phenomenon is that our memories are deeply influenced by our emotional experiences. We filter the past through the lens of our emotions.
That means we’re more likely to imprint painful, disappointing and negative experiences within our emotional framework rather than the happier and more positive events. It seems that we’re more likely to register uncomfortable experiences because they help us to avoid potentially dangerous or threatening situations. It’s part of our ancient survival reflexes. A burnt finger leaves an indelible mark on our memory and we learn to be more cautious around naked flames.
Accept yourself, love yourself, and keep moving forward. If you want to fly,
you have to give up what weighs you down.

The depth and persistency of negatively-charged memories can cast a long shadow over the present and extend an unexpected influence all the way into the future.
It’s astonishing to witness the way that people repeat the same experiences over and over again. It’s as if the emotionally-engraved events that produced anger, fear, despondency, shame and bitterness can reach out and shape our behaviour for the rest of our lives.
Unless, of course, we learn to recognise how the past continues to impact every hour of every day. And that realisation can provide the motivation for each of us to make a conscious effort to unchain ourselves from whatever happened in the past. Completely.
Last night I lost the world, and gained the universe.

Yes, it requires effort. Everything worthwhile in life requires effort. But what exactly do we need to do to set ourselves free from the massive edifice of the past? How can we free ourselves from the emotional weight of the past that each of us drags around like a portable monument to suffering? The secret is to cut off all the emotional energy that feeds your memories. Stop pouring energy into the negative memories that inform your experiences of the past.
The moment you stop pouring energy into your memories, they lose their influence. When you take a deep breath and see the past from a greater distance, you can observe what happened from a completely neutral perspective. You learn to recognise that the past has its own particular meaning because you’ve added your own particular interpretation.
Stepping back, remembering to smile because it’s an effective response to the problems of the past, choosing to be kind to yourself, making a clear declaration that you’re going to stop beating yourself up over every mistake and allowing yourself the latitude to fail because it’s a natural part of making progress – these are the simple steps that can help you to free yourself from the shadows of the past. It’s akin to being reborn. In many ways, it’s as if the past happened to someone else.
Once you realise you deserve a bright future, letting go of your dark past is the best choice you will ever make.
― Roy T. Bennett
Cutting the emotional links to the past will set you free to experience a new and different kind of future. If you aspire to a brighter, happier and more successful future than anything you’ve experienced in the past, this is the moment to draw a line between where you are right now and where you were before. Cut the connection. Turn your heart, your mind and your emotional energy towards those wonderfully bright images you’ve created for the future. And now your future can unfold as you’ve chosen, free from the negative influences of other times and other places. It’s a moment to celebrate. Because your life will move on ways that would’ve seemed impossible before. Let the adventure begin!
The beautiful journey of today can only begin when we learn to let go of yesterday.
