Creating innovative solutions to tackle plastic pollution

Dear Plastic Revolutionary,

We’ve reached an enormous milestone of recovering over 200,000kg of plastic waste from the Lamu Archipelago in the last 15 months and redirecting them from landfills, and our oceans into durable and innovative products inspired by our Swahili heritage.

Thanks to support from the SMEP Programme, we’ve built a strong network of? community collectors spanning over 30 neighbourhoods on Lamu Island and beyond. What’s even better is that with our tractor, we’re building an even wider network, recovering more plastics and reaching?more communities.?

Want to find out more about our neighbourhood collections? Check out our instagram post.

As we expand our waste collection scheme across the Archipelago and witness the state of plastic pollution in some of the most ancient Swahili settlements, like Siyu, we’re reminded of the importance of protecting Lamu’s unique heritage which is a fusion of many early cultures that influence it’s boats and beautiful hand carvings.?

Our co-founder Ali Skanda comes from a family of traditional carpenters so we’re lucky to have his guidance on how to use our recycled plastic lumber to create heritage furniture pieces alongside our Head of Design, Katharina Elleke who?are also training the next generation of?carpenters to?preserve this ancient craft. .?
