Creating inclusive offices through accessible workplace design

Good workplace design is essential in creating modern, inclusive and connected offices. The Government Workplace Design Guide sets out the aspirations for government workplaces and provides details on how workplaces should look and the experience when working in them.?

We aim to create great workplaces that inspire everyone to be their best at work, removing any barriers that may exist and cause separation.?

We go beyond meeting minimum standards or legislative requirements wherever possible by developing inclusive and accessible workplaces for all, leading to greater collaboration and co-creation. This is one of our workplace principles when developing our Government Hubs. Below are just some of the considerations we take when designing workplaces.

Breakout space:?

An open, comfortable and inviting space that encourages mobility, interaction and respite from desk-based tasks.?

Our breakout spaces offer a variety of accessible furniture solutions and some acoustic and visual protection. They are accessible to everyone including those with visible and non-visible disabilities, without the need for workplace adjustments or assistance.

Refreshment zones:

A space for breaks or relaxed, informal interactions.

These spaces are highly inclusive and accessible, with lowered counters and refreshment facilities that have clearance underneath to provide easy access for wheelchair users.?

Task setting:?

Quiet workspaces to support individual work which requires quiet conditions and concentration.

These workstations are simple and intuitive to use. We provide height adjustable desks in these areas and digital tools, such as additional screens which are easy to understand, regardless of the user’s experience.

Wellbeing rooms:?

Wellbeing rooms provide a quiet, neutral space away from the office environment for people to take time out from the workplace. These rooms are accessible to all with height adjustable furniture.?

In all areas of our buildings we aim to create spaces which are usable for as many people as possible without the need for workplace adjustments. In doing so, we support a diverse Civil Service to carry out its work efficiently in all regions and nations of the UK, helping to recruit the best talent, improve productivity and deliver a more diverse and inclusive, modern Civil Service that can work in a smarter, more flexible way than ever before.
