Creating Great Food For A Better Future

Creating Great Food For A Better Future

At the Bega Group, our purpose is centred on – “Creating Great Food for a Better Future” – and this frames our approach and focus areas when it comes to sustainability. A better future means a better future for our people, consumers and planet.

A better future also means a better future for the environment on which we depend and the communities in which we operate. Our sustainability strategy focuses’ around three key areas: circularity, community and collaboration.

Whilst creating great food for a better future is our organisational purpose, it is also an ambition and personal motivator for many of our team members who hold sustainability close to their hearts. Hear from some of our people firsthand on why sustainability is important to them and what it is about sustainability at Bega Group that resonates with them most.

Jacqui Roth, Head of Marketing - Beverages

Whilst I feel connected to all three pillars that make up the refreshed Bega Group sustainability strategy, I feel the strongest pull towards the community component. The products that we make all start with our people and personal connection continues to drive our business every day.

February 2024, marks my 10th year at the Bega Group. I started as a graduate back in 2014 and was first attracted to the business by its amazing portfolio of brands. Nearly a decade on and working here still feels like working with family. My daily experiences feel inclusive and collaborative, and I am so proud of how the team continues to show up and support one another. The Bega Group is truly my home away from home and it’s the incredible people here that drive this feeling. The fact that the Bega Group is committed to keeping Aussie brands in Aussie hands is inspiring.

Sustainability is central to all that we do. There are so many sustainability initiatives that I feel proud of, but the one that stands out the most to me is our rollout of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) bottles. In 2023, we began to transition to rPET across the Juice Brothers 500ml and 1.5 litre bottles as well as the Dare Iced Coffee, Big M and Dairy Farmers Classic impulse (under 1L) ranges. We commenced the transition of the impulse ranges in March 2023, and we expect to roll this out nationally throughout 2025.

I am extremely motivated by the Bega Group’s purpose of "Creating Great Food for a Better Future”. This really does start with us- the future is in our hands, and we should be bold and brave with our actions as we work towards this purpose. We plant the seeds now for future generations to come and as a new mother, I don’t take this responsibility lightly.

For anyone considering a career at the Bega Group, you’ll never look back. There really is no place quite like it!

Jane Camilleri, Sustainability Program Manager

For me, when it comes to sustainability the key area of impact that is most important is our commitment to circularity as this has the biggest impact on our planet and our responsibility for stewardship of resources we use.

As Sustainability Program Manager at the Bega Group, when I reflect on our purpose "Creating Great Food for a Better Future ", for me both at work and personally this talks to the commitment to work together to reduce our impact for future generations. It is this purpose and our people that keep me here. We have several initiatives and actions when it comes to sustainability and one that I’m very inspired by is the Bega Valley Regional Circularity Cooperative, of which we were a founding member. The ‘Bega Circular Valley 2030’ program is a transformational regional development initiative with a vision to establish the Bega Valley as the most circular regional economy by 2030. When it comes to sustainability, we’ve got some exciting projects on the horizon.

Something you may not be aware of is Bega Group's focus on human rights and ethical sourcing. Our Modern Slavery Statement outlines how we address and mitigate human rights issues in our supply chain. Also, our commitment to support coffee sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified Farms for our Dare brand is something I’m very proud of.

If you asked me to describe the Bega Group in three words, they would have to be supportive, dynamic and innovative. When it comes to the culture here it is really about everyone working together to deliver great products. I think the Bega Group is an Australian icon and this is what attracted me initially, but day to day I really enjoy getting to work on diverse topics across the business.
