Creating Fearless Organizations - Build Psychological Safety.
Sometimes in our worklife we must have thought atleast once "What others may think of my doubt as silly, stupid?" , so inorder to avoid others considering us as "incapable ","oh he Does'nt know this also"..we refrain ourselves from asking questions. Other possible reasons could be fear driven work environment, low self confidence ,to feel safe from being ridiculed - avoid from others making fun of my questions..oh complex thoughts and theories in mind stops from asking questions.
Sometimes there is fear to admit mistakes because of past experiencesof blames from management , if once a mistake is admitted then your mistakes are forever in the memory of manager and it could be used as main reason from losing a promotions, or performance bonus. Also there is this Crazy perfectionism driving the team - To be perfect without doing any mistakes or if by mistake a mistake happens quitely bury it under soil.. all these are signs..symptoms of " Psychologycally Unsafe Workplace or Team ".
May be early and late 90's Fear driven management must have given best results and productivity.. but as we progress "Fear" drives away "Productivity" , "Creativity ", "Innovation and Team work" . As a result Organization goes miles away from making profits getting new customers. So wake up my dear Organizations , Teams and take action steps to create a Fearless environment at your workplace.
Did you anytime thought how 谷歌 , ApppleInc , 亚马逊 and few more Product companies are coming up with creative Apps, gaining customers from every corner of the world..its because of the culture they have developed over the years.. its not built in one day or a year...its everyday job. When Employees are fearless to express their ideas , fearleass to make mistakes and admit them , fearless to question if something is not going right.. then there is no looking back.. i say its a sign of Growth. So encourage your people to enjoy these basic rights of workplace.
Creating a Psychological Safety at workplace is close to my heart, every team i worked so far across my organizations , i contributed my best to create a Safe workplace. I love designing solutions for creating psychologically safe workplaces.sometimes it was Fantastic experience and sometimes it was a great learning. When things are not going as per your expectations ..then we need not treat it as Failures ..instead another great learning of how not to do it. If you have liked my article do post your comments.
