Creating Excellence: 6 Mindsets for Success

Creating Excellence: 6 Mindsets for Success

In the streets of Ephesus, in the early Christian community A.D. 60-65, Paul mentors young Timothy, imparting timeless leadership wisdom (1 Timothy 4:12-16) . Yet, Paul's teachings cross the line of religious doctrine, offering insights applicable to leaders across organizational domains.

Over the course of my 20 years as a franchise owner and 11 years leading Terrace Park's unpaid professional firefighters, I've noticed a consistent thread: leadership skills are universal. You can enhance your leadership capacity by engaging in continuous learning, inspiring those who follow you, and sharing your knowledge with others.

The Timothy Principle: Leading by Example

In a famous "Seinfeld" episode , Mr. Peterman calls his office from Burma (Myanmar). Elaine happens to be in his office and picks up. Peterman tells Elaine he is burned out and has "already left" the catalog. Elaine asks who will run the business, and Peterman says, "Why not you?"

In contrast to fictional scenarios where leadership falls in Elaine's lap, Timothy's journey epitomizes intentional leadership development. While Elaine's comedic mishap in "Seinfeld" underscores the pitfalls of accidental and unprepared leadership, Timothy's deliberate cultivation of character and competence serves as a guide.

Leadership requires effort, time, and opportunity, resulting in mastery .

Earning Respect: Beyond Charisma and Titles

Our culture fixates on personal charm and titles; Paul's counsel to Timothy echoes the essence of authentic leadership: respect is earned through leading by example and competence.

A man invites his boss to dinner one day, hoping to gain the boss's favor. The man is in the kitchen helping his wife finish the dinner, and their young son is left with the boss, who asks the boy what's for dinner.

"Goat," the son says. That puzzles the boss. "Goat? Are you sure?" The son replies, "I think so. This morning, I heard Dad say to Mom, 'Might as well have the old goat for dinner today.'

The anecdote of the dinner invitation underscores the importance of authenticity and trust in leadership dynamics.

Evolving from a Fixed to Growth Mindset

The dichotomy between "I have to" and "I get to" mindsets shapes leaders' trajectories. Fixed mindsets, anchored in complacency and status quo, yield to growth mindsets, which embrace continuous learning, collaboration, and improvement.

A leader chooses their mindset in each challenge and, with practice and intentionality , relies on growth over the status quo over time.

Embracing the Journey: From Destination to Process Orientation

While fixed mindsets tether leaders to focus on destinations, growth mindsets celebrate the leadership journey. Embracing the process fosters resilience, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to consistent improvement.

There once was a business owner who rarely smiled. She focused on her organization's imperfections and daily challenges. "If only…" started most of her thoughts and resulted in shattered relationships.

One day, during a break at her brand's annual conference, she talked with a colleague who seemed to find joy in the smallest victories. "Your franchise seems to grow each quarter despite facing similar obstacles. How can you stay so positive?" she asked. The smiling colleague replied, "I'm not perfect. Without challenges, we wouldn't need to find new solutions to better serve our employees and customers."

Learning from Failure: The Catalyst for Growth

Failures catalyze growth and resilience. Rather than dwelling on past missteps, growth-minded leaders acknowledge failures, extract lessons, and forge ahead with renewed determination. Leaders accept success as the foundation to build, not the destination of their hard work.

Cultivating Habits: Nurturing a Culture of Excellence

Habits shape success. From small, intentional steps to seeking new knowledge and experiences, habits create leaders' trajectories, moving them toward sustained growth and impact.

In franchise ownership, leadership excellence transcends mere competence; it radiates from example, resilience, and continuous growth. Leadership isn't for everyone because of the complexity and hard work. Learn from the timeless wisdom of Paul and the transformative power of a growth mindset, forging a path of excellence and impact in the communities we serve.

Please share your thoughts and comments when you choose "I get to" so others can learn from your experience. Thank you for reading my thoughts.

When a story is still valid 2000 years later, you know you've hit on a universal principle. Curious about your opinion on a related topic: we have universal principles available to us from many sources, yet we both over-complicate AND seek shortcuts. Why?
