Creating Digital Products - configuring PPM to support it ?

I saw this excellent quote from Orlando Machado (chief data officer for the Lego Group), in “How Lego plays with data: An interview with chief data officer Orlando Machado" by McKinsey (link below)

“We’re increasingly trying to create digital products that supplement the physical experience. . . . We want to have a seamless contemporary workplace where people’s lives could be made much easier using technology.”

Managing data like a product means treating data as a valuable asset that needs to be planned for, developed, and maintained in a way that maximizes its value to the organization. When data is managed like a product, a company will have a clear understanding of its data needs, and will implement processes and systems to ensure that the data is accurate, up-to-date, and accessible to those who need it.

Managing data like a product involves several key activities, including:

  1. Identifying the data needs of the organization and defining the data product that will meet those needs.
  2. Developing and implementing processes for collecting, storing, and organizing data.
  3. Analyzing data to extract insights and inform business decisions.
  4. Ensuring the security and compliance of data to protect against unauthorized access or misuse.
  5. Regularly reviewing and updating data management processes to ensure they are effective and efficient.

So what role for PPM in this ?

A project portfolio management (PPM) software can help a company create digital products that supplement physical experiences by providing a centralized platform for planning, organizing, and tracking the development of these products. With a PPM tool, a company can:

  1. Identify and prioritize projects based on their alignment with business goals and potential impact.
  2. Assign resources and track progress towards project deliverables.
  3. Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to ensure that all project requirements are met.
  4. Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of the digital products.

Some examples of digital products that a company might create to supplement physical experiences include:

  1. Mobile apps that allow customers to access information, make purchases, or book appointments from their phones.
  2. Virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) experiences that enhance the physical products or services offered by the company.
  3. Online training or education programs that allow employees to learn new skills or stay up-to-date on company policies.
  4. Customer portals or self-service portals that allow customers to access information, make changes to their accounts, or request support without the need to speak to a representative.

I am keeping it simple as I think most people reading this are just trying to find ways to drive more Automation and Digitization for the people they serve - but lots more can be done, from just getting the basics in place, to really increasing the focus on Ideation
