Creating a Culture of Continuous Learning: The Role of Training and Development

Hello all! Lee, here! ??

I’m writing to you on my maternity leave. During my time off, I’ve seen a lot of synergies between being a CEO and a new mom. I stepped into my new role of being a mom literally not knowing ANYTHING – never held a baby or changed a diaper. So I knew I had a lot to learn!?

Creating an environment of continuous learning is something that has been helpful for me to build in the house and at the office. After all, learning and development is the foundation that builds progress!?

It’s just not an activity or box to check, but more so a journey that we engage in that shapes the person we aspire to become. Every moment we spend learning is an investment in our future selves and toward realizing our great potential.

Driving the individual growth of your whole team helps propel the organization’s success and fosters a culture of innovation, resilience, and adaptability.?

So how do you set up a training & development program and how do you foster it? Here’s my breakdown:

1. Assess Training Needs: Assess the skills, gaps, and aspirations through various forms of feedback from employees and design a targeted program to address those needs.

2. Designing a Targeted Program: Once you’ve identified the personal needs of the employee or the organization, put together the goals and map out the workshops, courses, and mentoring that would help best support the mission at hand. ??Pro tip: Ensure that the program is aligned with a realistic ability to match schedules, and be aware of catering to different learning styles.

3. Encourage Participation: Make sure that the employee is really bought into the opportunity for growth. If possible, create incentives for participation such as recognition, rewards, and/or career advancement opportunities.

4. Measure Impact: When setting up the goals, make sure to use metrics to evaluate their performance, engagement, and if possible also retention rates. Review and update your training strategy accordingly to ensure feedback is implemented.

Training and development are the driving forces behind a thriving learning culture, empowering employees to enhance their skills, stay engaged, and fuel innovation. Let us celebrate progress in all its forms, knowing that each step, no matter how small, brings us closer to a brighter, more fulfilling future.?

Invest in your people today, and watch your organization flourish tomorrow. ??

First congrats!!! Second, I try to read up on things that interest me - they don't necessarily need to be work related but I find employee engagement correlations everywhere - coincidentally I just made my first ever linkedin post pulling in a sports reference and relationship to employee engagement. We can learn from anyone and anywhere, we just have to be open to it!
