Creating course structure

In my last article we discussed how to do research and compilation of data . Lets now sees how to create a course outline and structure.

Definitions:

  • A course outline is a document that benefits students and instructors. It is an essential piece when designing any course
  • A syllabus is a planning tool. Writing it guides the instructor’s development of the course. Through the development of a syllabus, instructors can set course goals, develop student learning objectives, create and align assessment plans, as well as establish a schedule for the course.
  • One Day workshops/programs: A single day training intervention targeted to provide a specific outcome for a specific issue/problem

Now there are a few things to consider

For a course :

  • ?How many training interventions are there? (A course runs over a period of time. With each intervention having its own learning outcomes.)
  • How long is each intervention? (Hours/minutes)
  • What is the training objective?
  • Assessments
  • Feedback

For a Single day Workshop: This is the one that many of my audiences are most interested in.

  • Learn about the group.
  • Formulate goals. 
  • Brainstorm activities/tools
  • Sort the list.
  • Develop sequence and list them in a spreadsheet. 
  • Create an Agenda (Main points, Visual aids &Discussions and activities)
  • Develop a Follow-up Plan
  • During the Workshop – Get People Involved

There's no doubt that planning a great workshop is a lot of work. But if you spend time thinking through the details, everyone will get full value from the event.

The workshop's goal should be at the center of all your planning. Creative exercises will get everyone relaxed and involved, and please remember to follow up afterward: take feedback it's the only way you'll improve your next event.
