Creating a conference battle plan

Spring and summer conference season are upon us—here's how to maximize your time and financial investment.

This week I had a conversation with Shay Lynn D. (podcast dropping soon!) where she broke down her genius strategy for attending a conference. With TIA (Transportation Intermediaries Association) hosting their conference next week, I figured it's a perfect time to share our best tips.

And whewwww Shay had some good ones. Here is a list of what she does:

  • Prints out a map of the conference/expo hall and attach it to a clipboard. On that map, she's highlighted the booths belonging to the companies she wants to work with. The green highlight signifies the money contacts.
  • For those contacts in green, she connects with someone from the company BEFORE the conference on social media and writes down that name along with anything they connected on (like a sports team or company PR release). And then she'll use that info to introduce herself to whoever is at the booth.
  • While at the booth, she'll snap a pic with that person and share it with the company after the conference is over.

This is a genius approach because it maximizes your time while at a conference and creates a moment of genuine human connection to create that lasting impression.

Attending a conference can sometimes be overwhelming, but going in with a battle plan and allowing a little room for spontaneity are some major keys.

Speaking of conferences, my conversation with Anne Reinke from TIA dropped this week. Give it a listen below:

For more battle planning, I posted on Linkedin a while back about what must-have items are in my conference bag. Check it out along with all the other helpful comments like wearing sneakers day to night and also bringing a mini can of dry shampoo!

Blythe Brumleve, this was a great read! A lot of pieces of the write up resonated with me. I'm all about planning prior to the show to make sure I know the who, what, where, and hows!

This is so smart Blythe Brumleve - you’ll get so much more out of the conference experience with a little pre-planning.

I called it being over prepared, but I like your term way more "conference battle plan" ?? And yes, this is also my strategy to maximize conventions/conferences, and it has proven to be very successful! Map out the booths and if there are seminars, mapping those out as well, so I know when and where I need to be somewhere, so I don't miss anything!
