There are so many things that go into building a business, or growing to the next level, and today I want to focus on one of the most-skipped steps – vision.
So, why is vision important?
Whether you are a solopreneur or a small business owner with a team, there are people you’ll be working with who need to know what your vision for your business is, so they can support you in achieving it. Your CPA, marketing team, social media strategist, just to name a few.
The other piece of the puzzle is that if you don’t have a clear vision on where you want to go and how you want to get there, chances are… you won’t.
As Jack Canfield says, begin with the end in mind.
Ok, so now we know having a vision will make a difference. But how do we get there?
Let’s make a start in just 3 simple steps.
First, make a list of your aspirations and the intention you have for your business. Think about how your business is an outpicturing of those intentions, and really think about what it is that inspired you to create this business in the first place.
Second, think about what the opportunities are in the marketplace, and how your business can fill one of those opportunities.
Third, craft it into a short, concise story. In 1 – 3 sentences or a single clear statement, describe how your business intends to achieve those aspirations.
Here are some examples of completed ones:
Amazon.com -
Our vision is to be earth's most customer centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online.
Dell -
Dell listens to customers and delivers innovative technology and services they trust and value.
eBay -
eBay pioneers communities built on commerce, sustained by trust, and inspired by opportunity. eBay brings together millions of people every day on a local, national and international basis through an array of websites that focus on commerce, payments and communications.
Again, there are ways to go deeper and create a more lasting vision, but this is a great start, and much more than many businesses ever do. We'll be diving a bit deeper on my Facebook Live in Conversations on Business on Facebook this week. The way I look at it is that running a business without a vision is like taking a cross-country trip without having a route in mind. You might see some interesting things, but you also might miss some golden opportunities along the way. So let’s get your GPS set for success, and stay tuned for my next article, where we’ll be talking about turning your passion into income.
