Creating Community

When I tell others what I do for a living, my response, “Property Management”, is often met with a quizzical expression and blank stare. Then come the questions.?"So, you lease apartments? Fix and clean things? Collect rent?"?At this point, I’m convinced they're picturing Schneider from the 70's sitcom, "One Day at a Time".

As property management professionals, our teams certainly perform the above tasks- and more. However, when I reflect on what we truly do for a living, a thought occurs to me. We are really in the business of creating community.?Community is a place, or a group of people with common interests.?It’s also a feeling-?the feeling that comes from being in fellowship with others. We aren’t renting?units?to?tenants. Rather, we’re guiding future residents' home, and creating opportunities for these residents to be in fellowship with others.

The experience of creating community may be as elaborate as a resident event, or as simple as greeting a resident by name. Everything we collectively do for others, including our fellow team members, is creating community. So, the next time someone asks what you do for a living, tell them you’re a Community Creator, and share what that means to you!
