Challenging taboos around women’s health
Have you heard of Femtech? The central theme of Femtech Tokyo 2023 was all about 'Let’s talk about women’s health.' It was the second edition of this event focused on empowering Japanese women to take charge of their health and well-being. The idea for Femtech Tokyo came about when Atomu Shimoda, our Event Director for AI Expo at the time, stumbled upon an article discussing femtech while exploring new technologies. "Women deal with challenges every day, and tech can provide solutions," he said, sparking the launch of this specialized exhibition. Japan, with the highest cases of infertility treatments globally, faces taboos hindering open discussions on women’s health. Recognizing the need for change, we envisioned a dynamic platform to drive innovation and positive transformations in the industry.?
The first Femtech Tokyo was held from 20-22 October 2022 to help to disrupt these outdated ideas, drive femtech innovation, and empower women to take control of their wellness. So successful was the event in raising awareness around women’s health, that for 2023, it was extended to incorporate Women’s Mental Health Expo. You can read more about this game changer event here.? ?
In the driving seat
Road freight is a big deal in Brazil, making up 65% of all transported goods. It's no wonder that Fenatran , held in Sao Paulo every two years, is one of the most important trade fairs in the transport and logistics world.
Even though only 3.4% of drivers qualified in 2022 were women, there was a 61% increase in women hired in the Road Cargo Transport sector in Sao Paulo that same year. Inspired by this progress, Fenatran launched 'With Women at Fenatran' in 2022 to boost women's representation in the industry.
Collaborating with women-focused initiatives like 'Vez e Voz,' 'A Voz Delas' by Mercedes-Benz, and 'Rota Feminina Move,' the Fenatran team put together engaging in-person and digital content to shine a light on women in the sector.
They even hosted the 1st Women’s Forum in Transport and Logistics, where experts tackled issues faced by women in the industry, from lack of women in top positions to support networks. The Women’s Forum at Fenatran is back in Sao Paulo from November 4-8, 2024. In the meantime, dive into Fenatran’s blog for monthly articles and interviews with women in cargo transport and logistics.
Wings to fly?
According to Mervat Sultan, the founder of the Middle East Chapter of Women in Aviation, there's a growing representation of women in the aviation sector. The focus now is on helping the industry develop the right skills and capabilities for its future requirements.
We have been collaborating with the Middle East Chapter since 2013 to drive positive change for women in aviation at our Airport Show in Dubai. Today, the Women in Aviation (WIA) Conference continues to lead the way in bringing together international aviation leaders, inspiring role models, and numerous college and university students to discuss the challenges women encounter and how to conquer them.
At the 2023 conference, keynote speaker Nour Utayim shared her remarkable journey to becoming a commercial pilot with a room full of eager listeners. Originally from Damascus, Syria, she embarked on a new life in Canada as a refugee when war erupted in 2012. Inspired by her father and grandfather, Nour pursued her dream relentlessly, with the unwavering support of her family and generous sponsors. Today, she proudly serves as a third-generation pilot for Air Inuit in Canada.
The Women in Aviation event also featured an exclusive awards program honouring key women driving gender diversity in the industry. Additionally, a dedicated CV drop-off facility was set up to enable students and graduates to apply for jobs and internships at the event.
Women in cybersecurity
Cybersecurity is evolving, but it's vital to create safe spaces where women can connect, share stories, and learn together. This is crucial for those starting out, as women under 30 represent just 26% of the cybersecurity workforce.
