Creating Change for the Better: Leading with Compassion
?
Five years of covid and post-covid pressures won’t simply be erased by a few vacations. Many of us are going through post-traumatic stress. Couple that with rapid technology change, AI changing the whole framework of the way we do things, and this year being a political one.?
?
Workplace leaders can offer a sane voice in tumultuous times.
So, what are the qualities that they need to have these days to make wise choices?
?
??? Integrity. During the pandemic, I heard several CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies say, “I don’t have all the answers, but I’ll be as transparent as I can with what I know.” That created some trust that we all needed at a time when we didn’t know if we were going to live or die. Being true to your word, especially on important issues, is vital to being a leader.
?
??? Resilience. We’ve all demonstrated (just by living through the last five or six years) how resilient we are. And for all of us, the one thing that’s guaranteed is that change will happen. Think of it like this: you’re at a beach, and you hold up your hand to try to push back a wave. Are you going to be able to do that? No. Well, you can’t push back change either. We have to learn how to move through that change, just like we move through the waves, and make the best choices.

??? Empathy, Compassion, Kindness. I have heard too many stories about mental health challenges, both inside and outside of corporations. People may walk around and answer “I’m okay” to your question of “How are you?,” but they may not always be. That’s when a bit of humanity is needed, really taking an interest in a coworker, or even your boss. When appropriate, if you notice that they don’t seem right, try to find out more, and listen beyond their words. Someone who cares may be exactly what they need at that moment.
