2024 Job Market Growth

Employers added 256,000 jobs in December 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Dow Jones estimated employment would increase by 155,000. BLS data shows there were 186,000 monthly average jobs gained in 2024, compared to 251,000 in 2023.

In December 2024, the national unemployment rate decreased to 4.1%. To compare, the rate was 3.7% in December 2023. The average unemployment rate for 2024 was 4%.?

The latest BLS report highlighted the health care, retail, leisure and hospitality and government sectors had the highest job growth during December 2024. Temporary help services jobs increased by 5,300 last month. Seasonally adjusted data showed this sector gained 6,200 jobs in November 2024, an increase from the 1,600 initially reported.
