Hi Everyone,
Welcome to our November edition of BBB Thursday. .
I'm writting this months newseltter sat on my sofa with my arm in a sling after dislocating my shoulder running in the rain with two of my dogs.?
I would like to point out I am not a runner! In fact I only started last week having being challenged by a friend to do a half marathon next year. So far it is not going well. But despite plans not going to plan?I will not be detered. So we adapt...
Why am I telling you this?
Because just like many of you, I too am a business owner and sometimes unpredicatble and unwanted things happen. This could be something directly in the business, or in my case, personally to me, that COULD have a negative impact on business.?
Wtih this in mind I decided to change this weeks focus last minute to address the importance of working ON your business rather than IN your business.?
Covering:
BUSINESS Tips:
Creating an adaptable business plan
I talk alot about working ON your business rather than IN your business to my clients. This is usally in relation to helping them get a better work life balance but the scenario of me dislocating my shoulder demonstrates another example of why it's so important to have systems set up so that your business can cope when unpredictable things happen or you yourself can not be there.?
Before anything else it starts with a plan.?Why?
Because this is the easiest way to start looking at your business in a bigger picture. It gives you the chance to step away from the day to day runnings and observe your business from the outside. This in turn allows you to realise and concentrate on the areas of your business that need your attention.
From here you can start to work ON your business and work towards creating a business that can work efficiently even when hiccups happen, and essentially without the need for you to micromanage every aspect.?
But first, it's time to make a plan that is flexibe. Lot's of people get put off by creating a business plan because they think it has to be rigid and formal but that's not what we're after here. This plan needs?to reflect real life and in doing so be able to adapt and change..?
You might be thinking, what's the point then?
The point is, your plan will outline your goals, it will act as a constant reminder of what needs to happen in order for you to achieve those goals and in doing so will keep you focused. By regulalry updating and adjusting your plan you will create opportunities to step back from your business and take an objective view. It will allow you to see what is working and what isn't and clearly show you where things need to be altered in order to reach that end goal. This is why the flexible part is essential, it takes into account that life happens and that the straight line plan doesn't always work but reminds you that this doesn't mean you're not going to reach those goals.?It teaches you to adapt and celebrate the smaller wins along the way.
The training for my 2023 half marathon has not gone well so far, dislocating my shoulder was not in the plan, but it doesn't mean I am not going to accomplish my goal, it just means my training will need to adapt. My plan needs to be altered but the goal remains the same.
If you're new to planning and need a little help to get started then feel free to download my 90 day goal setting workbook that will guide you through how to get started.?

The E-myth Revisited: Michael Gerber
Most commonly people become business owners because they are good at what they do and they want to build something that makes them happy and allows them to enjoy the things in life that running a successful business can provide. Yet, the sad reality is that many business owners I speak to have fallen out of love with their business, they spend far too much time tiredlessly working IN their business and very little time doing the things that they enjoy doing.?
As Gerber points out in the E-Myth what business owners need to remember, in order to gain the perfect balance between business and lifes enjoyment, is that what the business produces, 'the commodity', is not in fact the most important thing. This is where lots of business owners fall down. Instead more importance needs to be placed on 'how it's produced' ie The Business itself. What Gerber suggests is that you need to think of your entire business as your product and focus ON it rather than endlessly working IN it.?

The easiest way to do this is to view your business like a franchise—to systematise operations so that it no longer relies on you. This is how to gain that work life balance.
Not only does E-Myth explain this in further detail but Gerber goes as far as creating a step-by-step?guide through the various stages in the life of a business.
Through this book, you’ll find the answer to the following questions:
How can I get my business to work without me?
How can I get my people to work but without my constant interference?
How can I own my business and still be free of it?
How can I spend my time doing the work I love to do rather than the work I have to do?
