LinkedIn is rolling out the ability to share and record videos directly from your mobile app. No longer just the province of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other networks, you can now record video directly from LinkedIn's mobile app and share it with your network of connections.
Here are the step by step visual instructions to access this functionality and utilize it immediately.
Not Everyone Has Video... Yet!
To determine if you are one of the lucky ones with early access, open your mobile app and click this button:
That little button allows you to create a post. The next screen is what will tell you whether you have this new functionality or not:
If you have a camera icon... CONGRATS! You can record video! If you don't have it yet, do not despair! LinkedIn is rolling it out and it may just take a couple more days until it hits your mobile app.
Let's Record and Post Video!
Once you click the camera icon you get two options:
You can either record a video straight from your phone on the fly OR you can select a pre-recorded video. If you are sitting in a conference and want to record the presentation as it is happening or you want to record yourself delivering some quick thoughts, Record a Video is the way to go. If you already recorded the video and the file is on your phone, you will want to select Choose a video from the gallery.
Let's choose a video from the gallery, first:
If anyone is curious, that video from July 12th is Rod Stewart in concert... he was awesome! Decide which video you want to upload (I would not recommend uploading Rod Stewart concert footage or your kids playing with Thomas the Tank Engine) click the thumbnail to select and post it.
Most people, I believe will choose record a video. When you choose to record a video, the camera app opens and you can begin filming by clicking the camera icon:
Go ahead-- start recording yourself... or click the icon to reverse the camera and record what's in front of you. You can pause the video if you need to OR when you are finished, click the stop button:
Once you click stop, LinkedIn gives you a chance to post it OR to retake the video.
When I recorded my first LinkedIn video, I recorded about 5 videos until I was finally happy. The best thing I can say to you is don't strive for perfection-- just create an authentic video that is chock full of value for others.
When you are ready, click the OK button. LinkedIn will now create a post with that video embedded:
Make sure you add some context that clues people in on the subject of the video and gives them a reason to watch it. You may also want to add hashtags so your post can be found. You can also mention people to kick start interactions. Click the Post button to unleash your video upon the world.
This is what the post will look like:
In retrospect, "Video! Yay! " doesn't provide much context but I was excited and I couldn't wait to post it.
Clearly, I am overjoyed that LinkedIn is finally getting aboard the video train. It's time.
How do you intend to use video? What kind of content will you create? What kind of content do you want to see from others? Please join me in the comments! I look forward to hearing your ideas and thoughts.
