Create Value To Transform Industry

When the value that was created becomes a sacred cow, companies enter into the default mode of extracting value from it. They live off the momentum of the previous value they created. These organizations exist by maintaining the status quo. They stop giving to their customer and instead take from their customers.

There is nothing like a game-changing value to shake these bureaucratic companies. They have become monoliths and are unable to learn to dance to new tones. The customer deserves better. Value creation should be progressive.

Working in the future will require employees to be value creators. They will be entrepreneurial in the way they operate. They will think and act like entrepreneurs. Their major preoccupation is to see how they can attain freedom at work by creating value for their employer, the market, and the industry. They understand that by creating value, they will gain more freedom at work, so they focus on developing the mindset and capability of value creators.

The goal of a game-changing value creator is to change the way the game is played in the industry. Business is a game and the organization that will determine how the game is being played will be one that creates the rules. When the rules are changed, the way the game is played is changed.

Steve Jobs had a skill for identifying people who can change the rules of the game and make the company lead the field. They change the rules and shift the game completely and then had other companies in their industry playing catch up.

Jonathan Ive created a game-changing design for Apple that completely transformed industries and made Apple a monopoly. Ron Johnson, a former target marketing executive created the Apple store that completely changed how the retail game was played. Apple simplified the SoundJam MP, a program developed by Bill Kincaid, and used it to transform an industry.

You need to understand that people create value, not an organization. And that value creation is a learnable skill. When an organization starts losing its place in the marketplace, its time to start creating new forms of value. Value creation is the job description of employees who want to make a mark and difference in the workplace.

When you transform an industry by creating game-changing value, two things happen:

1. Your competitors in that industry become your clients, and/or

2. Your competitors become your partners and collaborators.

To create a game-changing value, you should not focus on your competitors but on the marketplace. When you focus on making life better and enriching the marketplace, you will uncover a need that no one is serving in the marketplace. When you make things better, you will shift the market from under the leaders.

You have to be highly intentional about creating game-changing value. It doesn’t happen by accident. When I started working in the education space, I focused on what all the stakeholders needed but they were not getting. I looked at the system holistically. I wanted a situation where I can change the way school happens. I wanted to bring schooling to the 21st century. And this game-changing value is known as Truly Human School.

It will not only transform high school education, but also University education. Creating an industry-transforming value completely transforms the revenue model of an organization. What you created become needed by every stakeholder. It's just like they have been waiting for it all along. Since you are the one who calls the rule of the game, you will enjoy monopoly status. Your competitors will become your clients where you teach them the process you developed or they will use your platform.
