Create Shared Language Around Goals

Create Shared Language Around Goals

SMART goals, OKRs, BHAGs, KPIs, Big Rocks — there is no shortage of frameworks and terminology around goal setting.

Less important than the framework you choose is that your team is all speaking the same language around goals.

As you consider goals for the coming quarter, take a step back and get crystal clear on the terminology your team will use.

  • For example, do you use OKRs? Great: remind everyone what an "objective" is, what "key results" are, and why that framework was chosen. Then use that language consistently as you review OKRs.
  • We've also worked with some teams who call shared team goals "priorities." That's a great way to make your goal-setting culture distinct and reinforce the importance of the established goals. But it also requires an explanation of why the term is used and consistency from the manager in how they speak.
  • As a final example, how do you describe the measurement attached to a goal? Do you say "measurements," "metrics," "success criteria," or something else?

It's a good idea to think this through and write up a one-page document on the terms you'll use. Here's an example document. (Feel free to steal this approach!)

As always with goal setting: Keep it simple to start. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good!
