You are special. You are unique. But if you don’t know why; if you don’t know what it is that makes you different, then your Brand won’t reflect that and your business won’t profit off of it. Your Grand Differentiator is key to developing your Brand Persona and there are three steps to making that work for you.
What makes you different?
Being “better” is a hard thing to prove. And it’s also a hard standard to sustain because it’s subjective. That’s why being “different” is more useful than being “better.” People will remember you because you were different. And the people who relate will jump at the chance to work with you. But how do you identify what makes you different?
The best place to start is by looking at the people in your industry who do something similar to you. Now, look at who you are and what you do. How is it different? What can you say, that they can’t? The ways that you interact with your clients and all the things you provide and create that stand apart from the rest of your industry are a part of your differentiators
Create a Brand that incorporates your Grand Differentiator
Once you know what your Grand Differentiator is, include that in developing your Persona. It should show up in everything. Make sure it’s reflected in every visual element of your business. Your business cards, your website, your social media, everything.
Next, share your Grand Differentiator through your vocabulary. What words do you use that are your own? What -isms do you have? If you don’t know, ask a friend or client. Incorporate that vocabulary into your Brand and your messaging. Let it show up in your emails and sales pieces. Your words reflect your persona and your uniqueness.
Finally, include your Grand Differentiator in your Legend Response System. At every level of your business, you should have systems in place to deal with the unexpected. When you include your Grand Differentiator in those processes, you ensure a solid Brand presence no matter what circumstances hit.
The value of knowing your Grand Differentiator
When businesses don’t know how to set themselves apart, they usually end up offering discounts. It’s understandable to reduce pricing as a way to bring people in. But when you know what makes you different, when you embrace the qualities that make you unique, and you incorporate that into your Brand, you’ll stand apart and bring people to you without ever having to offer a discount.
There is profit in your persona. There is sustainable profit in you showing up as your true, most authentic, highest self. There is power in being able to say, “This is why I’m different.” And there is fun in getting to show up as who you truly are!
Whether it’s what you create, how you relate to clients, or how you speak with your community, identify what makes you different and share it everywhere. Share it like crazy and then leverage it.
Make a profit, stand out, serve well, develop amazing relationships, and above all, rock on.
