Create Professional Presentations In 3 Easy Steps

One of the downsides to training people in professional speaking is that I’ve had to instruct myself to just sit back and enjoy what a speaker is saying rather than analysing their presentation.

A tough ask but I’m working on it. No…not really.

I’m the same watching netball games. Having umpired at the top level, for many years I find it difficult to sit back and just enjoy the game without looking for the mistakes the players, and other umpires make.

When you know what to look for, it is impossible not to notice what is wrong.

Like netball, most speakers don’t know they are making mistakes.

And naturally, if they don’t receive constructive feedback, they aren’t able to correct.

Nobody can ever expect to be perfect, but, like anything you want to get good at, you do whatever it takes to learn how to do it well. And you then practice.

There is so much that can go wrong with a presentation and if the speaker has never received feedback, they can go on for years making the same mistakes over and over again. Alienating audiences because they aren’t clear about the outcome they want to achieve; they try to deliver too much information or have unprofessional PowerPoint slides which don’t follow a formula. I see it all the time.

It seems everyone with a product to sell or service to offer is now on the speaking trail. Which makes a lot of sense as it gets you in front of more people who might want your product or service. The problem is though, many of these speakers come to me for coaching after they have realised (and were disappointed) the presentation they gave didn’t produce the results they were after.

The secret I share with my clients is three magic words. Once you master these, you will be able to create fabulous presentations/workshops/courses you can duplicate over and over again is quick time.

So simple…they are…

  • Why?
  • What?
  • How?

And yes, it is essential they are developed in that order.
