Create Places that Matter
A few years ago, we found ourselves standing at the site of what would eventually become one of our most rewarding projects - a community hub in a growing neighborhood. The building and its use were little more than a dream at that point, but we knew from the onset that it could be more than just another structure. The new owner had a vision of how this hub could become a home base for many people. For us at designshop, the role wasn’t just about "drawing plans" or overseeing construction. It was about understanding the heart of that vision and bringing it into reality in a way that could truly impact lives. We put in the time listening to the stories, learning about hopes, needs, and what this place could really mean. It wasn’t just about building a facility; it was about creating a space where people could gather, grow, and connect—one that would strengthen the community for years to come. ?And by it’s own accounts, now draws 12,000-15,000 local and international guests each year.
This experience shapes each commission that we take on at designshop. It’s never just about the “blueprints” or the physical structure. It’s about the people. The one’s who will live, work, and interact in these spaces long after the ribbon is cut. By immersing ourselves in the development’s goals and listening to the community, we create environments that respond to the needs and aspirations of those who use them. In the case of that community hub, we didn’t focus on flashy architectural statements. Instead, we crafted a space that felt inviting, functional, and reflective of the neighborhood. That is what we aim to do in every project we undertake - build places that resonate with their users, not just today, but for years to come.
One of the most valuable lessons we’ve learned is that great design isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about creating long-term value. Understandably, many view architecture through the lens of cost. Budgets can be tight, and construction is expensive. But we’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of thoughtful, intentional design. In another case, a carefully reimagined retail space was able to revitalized an entire business district. By studying how people interacted with the space and rethinking the layout, we transformed a struggling area into a vibrant, thriving ecosystem. Today, that space isn’t just about commerce - it’s about connection, where people come together, creating a sense of community that had been missing.

This is why we believe it’s essential to help organizations understand the true value of working with architects who can deliver these kinds of results. It’s not just about cost; it’s about the lasting impact that great design can have on a community. It can change lives, energize neighborhoods, and foster growth in ways that go far beyond the physical structures themselves. And at designshop, we see that as the heart of our work.
As we look toward the future, we are excited about expanding our reach. While Memphis is our home and will always be a foundation for us, we know that our people-first approach has the potential to make a difference in other communities as well. Each new opportunity offers a chance to create something meaningful - a space that truly matters, not just in function, but in the way it improves lives.
For business owners, organizations, and communities looking to make a positive impact through thoughtful design, we are here to partner with you and turn that vision into something truly special. If you believe in the power of great design to inspire, connect, and transform, we’d love to be a part of your journey. Let’s build something that makes a difference.
