Within the workplace, what would you like to improve?
Maybe it’s that you would like to manage your time more efficiently.
Or that you want to improve relationships with people at work.
How about to increase your knowledge of industry?
To gain more clients.
To stay ahead of your competitors.
To improve emotional intelligence.
Or, perhaps it’s to enhance your listening skills.
Whatever it is, it’s important to follow through.
However, one goal or motivator is not the same for each person. Everyone grows in their own way. For people to grow, employees need to feel supported.
To nurture and retain talented workers, it’s important to provide personal development opportunities. Things like leadership training or learning a new skill will keep the company actively moving forward.
Some people strive at learning something new, while for others it’s a struggle.
Placing someone responsible for a certain task, when they aren’t interested in doing so, will not only be a pain for the employee but for the company as well. It’s important to know what your employees are passionate about.
Here are ways to support your employees’ initiatives towards personal development.
Organize a Plan
Meet with your staff and find out where they want to grow. Write down their goals. Maybe it’s to read X number of books or to take on a new task. Then, meet with them periodically to ask how things are going. Talking about goals with another person will allow people to feel entitled to follow through.
Innovative Exercises
Some people are more inclined to learn something new if it’s more engaging. Find learning exercises that are not your typical practices. It might be that staff take part in a workshop held in a different location. Another idea might be to find a source of technology that can get people involved.
Share the Benefits
Not only can personal development be utilized in the workplace, but also at home. It’s a win-win.
Peer Learning
Accomplishing something on your own is one thing but doing it as a team is another. Find people with common interests that can help one another achieve their goals. Have a strong directory of people that you can turn to. Challenge one another to improve.
Whether you’re a boss or an employee, personal development is something that everyone should practice.
