? Create and Nurture Connection: 7 Energetic Errors in Self Promotion

For easy and joyful marketing approaches that energetically attract your ideal clientele, read the latest articles here at Midweek Momentum .

Not many marketers discuss this hidden truth: the most daunting aspect of self-promotion isn’t just about perfecting your pitch or niche. You can do these flawlessly and still fail to connect with your ideal audience.

Through a decade of experience helping thoughtful and purpose-driven entrepreneurs create their dream businesses, a pattern has emerged. Reaching your ideal audience goes beyond tactics.

Doing what you were born to do calls for a new layer of work; inner work. Energetic alignment work. Incorporating energetic alignment work into our courses and programs over the years has transformed business growth..

In this issue, I spotlight 7 energetic errors that get in the way of effective self-promotion. Our team, clients and trainees have faced each of these. We can attest: they’re surmountable. ??

1. Indecisive

Thoughtful people do not rush in. It’s an advantageous trait, except when contemplation becomes indecision. Then it hinders establishing and nurturing a connection with your audience.

When you’re indecisive on key decisions, you broadcast “I’m confused” energy, which causes others to retreat. As you’d likely avoid seeking comfort from the unsettled, they’ll hesitate to turn to you for assurance.

To broadcast a “you can trust me” energy, here’s a simple practice: pause and take several grounding breaths. Remember there is help you can’t see, so ask for a sign. Then, listen deeply.

Recently, I was questioning an opportunity and felt at a loss. I asked for a sign. A really big, obvious sign. Hours later, I saw this spectacular rainbow on my afternoon dog walk. Had I arrived a moment later, I would have missed it.

The sign was clear, and my decision was too.

You don’t need absolute clarity on the rest of your life or even your year. Such long term clarity cannot be known. Stay in the present, ask for help, listen, and trust. You will be shown your best move.

2. Pleasing

Do you often silence yourself to maintain harmony? Or yield to someone else’s agenda because asserting your own feels uncomfortable? Pleasing takes many shapes, and the energetic error arises when we neglect our own truth to accommodate another’s.

In marketing and self-promotion, yielding to dominant voices or agendas results in being overlooked. In personality profiling, voicing a sentiment contrary to your beliefs indicates a lapse in personal integrity.

Energetically, you are deferring to others. The message is “look over there, that person is the one with the plan. Nothing to see here”.

Drawing your community’s attention requires a clear credo for others to embrace or decline. If you silence yourself to appease louder voices, you will also deprive those yearning for your perspective on the guidance they seek.

Living by the saying “If you can’t say anything nice, say nothing”, can cultivate feelings of loneliness. To establish and deepen connections with your audience, let your voice be heard. They’ve been waiting to hear what you really think.

3. Tolerant

We’ve been led to believe the flawed narrative that if you work tirelessly and diligently, then happiness and contentment will follow. However, those who achieve the trappings of success in this way, often discover the joy from their accomplishments are short-lived.

Scientific studies show we attract more of what we predominantly feel. So, if you approach a task, like marketing, with discomfort — as thoughtful entrepreneurs sometimes do — your frustration will be obvious to your audience.

E-motion = energy in motion.

Your dream business and life aren’t going to magically appear after years of a relentless grind. The emotions you invest in your dream will be reflected when you realize it.

Marketing options are plentiful. If your current tactics feel tedious, it’s time to re-evaluate. Explore self-promotion strategies that invigorate you, and watch as your ideal audience resonates with your newfound energy in motion that results.

4. Zealous

Shakespeare once wrote “The lady doth protest too much,” meaning that excessive fervour can sow seeds of doubt. In the realm of self-promotion, particularly when you want to leave the world better off than you found it, if your passion comes across as fanatical, it can inadvertently distance those you hope to engage.

How can those of us who are passionate about a better tomorrow walk this delicate balance?

By seeking the harmony of a grounded, authentic voice and not getting riled up, but grounding down to gain stability. Just as a tree finds its ability to grow is supported by the depth of its roots.

Consider Muhammad Ali, who brilliantly advocated for his beliefs.

During the Vietnam War, a time of clashing perspectives and raised voices, his calm refusal to participate in war stood out. He made himself heard through his grounded strength.

When you allow your truth to shine without overzealous masking, you invite your audience to see the stability and power of your message.

5. Misunderstanding

Like the tip of an iceberg, what we often see on someone’s surface is but a fraction of the whole.

When connecting with your niche, merely understanding their visible needs can lead to the energetic error of misunderstanding. Beneath the surface lies their deeper desires, fears, and desires that truly drive their decisions.

To genuinely connect with your audience, you must seek to understand what they hide beyond their surface. It’s akin to the role of a coach, who tunes into what is behind what is being said. Questioning to reveal deeper motivations.

The key to avoiding misunderstanding is profound listening. By attuning yourself to the needs of those you serve, you’ll gain a richer comprehension of your niche.

When you do, you’ll foster a connection that runs deep, genuine, and true.

6. Wanting to Be Popular

The pursuit of popularity can often reflect a desire to ‘prove oneself’ to the world. Yet, as Carl Jung wisely stated, “Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” Chasing audience approval, when driven by feelings of inadequacy, broadcasts an energetic message of ‘I am not enough’, which drives away the authentic appreciation that awaits the real you.

Growing up dyslexic with very capable brothers and sisters, for many years my motivation in business was to prove myself. Look at me. It was when I finally dropped doing my work to prove my worth that business started flowing.

The remedy to this energetic error was self-awareness and self-acceptance.

Instead of trying to fit every mold, embrace you. What makes you smile? What brings you joy? Why do you do what you do? There is nothing more alluring than being in the company of a person who is secure in who they are.

Offering your services from a foundation of, ‘I do this because I love doing this, and hey, I’m good at it!’, will foster connections with those who truly matter and will be infinitely more rewarding than fleeting moments of popularity!

7. Wishing

“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live,” J.K. Rowling writes in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”. Her sentiment underscores a critical energetic error in self-promotion: being trapped in wishful thinking.

Wishing without acting has an energetic signal of lack. Not having.

As captivating as dreams are, they must be backed by action to bring them to fruition. Today’s reality is a result of past actions. Your future reality depends on today’s actions.

My very favorite quote about vision is from Desiderius Erasmus captures the energetic solution: “There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.”

When you have an idea of what you want, decide to make it reality. Take small steps. However many you need. Embracing progress, actionable steps, and the credo “I’ll learn as I go” is the way to energize your most ambitious goals.
