Create Dimensions and Dimension Values

What are dimensions? And how are they useful?

  • Dimensions are a great organization tool available in Microsoft Dynamics Business Central which make it easy to organize and analyze data.
  • Creating new Dimensions and Dimension Values in Microsoft Dynamics Business Central is fairly simple.

  • It is important to note that you can create any Dimension you want, name it whatever you want, and add any values to it that you want. It is 100% customizable for your business.

Dimensions are categories you can use for organization. You can further organize the data inside each dimension by adding values. Think of these values like tags or subcategories.

Follow the steps:

  1. Go to Business Central
  2. Utilize the global search to locate "Dimensions."

  1. Upon locating the Dimensions option, proceed to add Dimensions based on client requirements. Ensure you populate the following fields: "Code," "Name," "Code Caption," "Filter Caption," and "Description."


  1. To add Dimensions Values, Go to Dimension tab > click in Dimension Values

  1. In the subsequent step, include Dimension values and complete the specified fields: "Code," "Name," and "Dimension Value Type".

  1. Congratulations! Your dimension and dimension values have now been successfully created.

What Are the Benefits of Dimensions?

The complexity of dimensions provides a multitude of enhanced business functionality to support in-depth assessments and power more calculated business decisions. Although complex, dimensions can be simple to use and customized to fit specific business needs.
