Create a Culture Where People Thrive

Welcome to the ninth edition of Culture Matters! ? I started this newsletter as an outlet to fuel my passion for creating workplaces where people know who they are and what they do make a difference.?

I’m excited for this week’s share because I’m coming full circle back to my first edition.? As it relates to workplace culture I’ve been a student, a practitioner, a researcher, a journalist, a consultant and all-around geek.? I believe people respond to the environments that they are in, and that in the workplace leaders play a pivotal role cultivating healthy and productive environments that increases both employee fulfillment and organizational effectiveness. Companies pay a big price for not knowing how to support their leaders to intentionally design and cultivate culture. I’d like to change that.??

We found through our research that there are any number of things that contribute to your culture — culture is the manifestation of a complex, every-changing ecosystem.? However, this is tractable.? There tend to be six interrelated culture influencers that cast a much larger shadow and play an outsized role informing the daily experience by reinforcing ways of interacting and working.

That’s why I’m so passionate about the Culture Web.? Introduced by Gerry Johnson and Kevan Scholes, the Cultural Web is a model that helps leaders focus on the key factors of culture and their impact on strategic issues. By understanding culture as an integrated system, teams are able to make their culture visible and holistically understand what contributes to the culture they are striving to create. ?

It’s an amazing experience that guides teams through a structured process to examine their current beliefs and behaviors, then design new practices that amplify and reinforce a set of shared beliefs…one they can act on immediately.?

The initial results are inspiring. This has been the culmination of countless conversations, numerous organizational visits, hours upon hours of research, and a bazillion workshop iterations with very open and giving organizations that want what we do: to create workplaces where people know who they are and what they do make a difference.????

I’m very proud of what we created and I’m excited to share it with as many organizations as I can!
