Create A Clever Strategy For Using Your Substitutes
Substitutes are in the headlines with the Premier League voting to join most of the rest of the soccer world and allow each team to play 5 substitutes – it seems the days of the super sub are here. But that could be good news for Jack Grealish.
Grealish has had an up and down season at Manchester City, where manager Pep Guardiola has struggled to get the best out of him – the problem is playing in a Guardiola team means you have to track your man, close down the passing lanes, and not to lose the ball by trying to beat every player in the opposition defence. Not Grealish's top skills.
But England versus Gemany Nations League game showed how Grealish can be most effective. In a game like this if you bring on someone with his skills when the opposition are tiring it is no longer a risk.
So what can youth coaches take from that? You can target tough games where you put on your best dribbler for 10 minutes at the end when he/she can make a difference to tired defences. By using subs wisely – and I don't mean for every game as you want all your players to have similar playing time – you can influence their effect on winning or losing by using them on and off the bench.

CUPELLO DRILL: Pass, Pass, Score - When teams are in possession, they need to have good support around the ball to keep possession and find the right opportunity to play forward and break lines.
