The red light is blinking, but I have no clue what to say. You been there before?

Or maybe you never turn your camera on because of insecurities.

I’ve been there too. It sucks.

You’re unable to leverage one of the best content avenues and struggle whenever you have to appear on camera.

Most of us, myself included, suck on camera. But it’s not our fault.

We’ve never been taught the truth behind creating successful and repeatable videos. Today, that changes.

In today’s article, I interview Kristian Altuve, a true expert in using videos within marketing. Enjoy!

{TL;DR}

Cool transitions and sexy captions don’t make videos great. It’s the core fundamentals, frameworks and strategies that makes videos great (again?). And by refining and improving your frameworks, you will decrease your time to create and increase the value each video brings.

Jordan Ogren: “Hey, Kristian. I want to start off with a ground ball question: Are video scripts necessary?”

Kristian Altuve: “I'd say yes and no. The script is the final output, but I think what's more essential is understanding your framework for creating a script. You then can refine and improve your framework instead of starting from scratch each time.”

JO: “Can you share an example?”

KA: “Sure. A common example is the four part script. The fundamental building blocks of a four part script are: (1) attention getter (2) identify the gap (3) how your offer bridges the gap (4) a call to action. If you do those four things, you're going to make better videos in half the time.”

JO: “Out of those four components of a script, which do you find to be the most important?”

KA: The attention getter (hook) is very important. It’s your tool to get people to stay for your entire video. The reason why hooks work is that it creates an open question (open loop) in the mind of your viewer. And they want to know the answer to it. So, they watch the rest of the video to find the answer.”

JO: “What is one thing that you now know about videos and video marketing that you wish you would have known earlier?”

KA: “It’s all about the strategy and frameworks. While video creating is becoming commoditized, the true value is in the underlying strategy of the video and the marketing strategy it fits within.”

JO: “So true. One final question geared to those who edit videos or want to in the future: What's one thing that has shortened your video editing learning curve?”

KA: Daily vlogs. When I was just starting to get into video creation, I committed to a 30 day daily vlog challenge. That’s filming, composing, and editing all within the same day.

By day 30, I was wicked fast with my edits, finishing them in under an hour. It didn't start that way, but that is the best way to dive in. It'll be uncomfortable, especially if you're new to talking on camera. But you won't regret it, because you’ll build-develop so many skills after that 30 Day Challenge.”

JO: “Any other final advice on creating great videos?”

KA: “Nowadays, I find myself doing a lot more customer research—to learn what information people really want, what value they're looking for, what challenges they're having problems with before creating a script.

It helps me in achieving my two reasons for using video:

  1. To help people do something faster
  2. Or help them do something in a new way that saves money or generates money.”

A quick thought before you go:

You don’t need video to be your pillar piece of content to leverage it. Video is also a wonderful repurpose tool.

If you think video ISN’T for you, please think that.

Or give my man Kristian a call.
