Last month, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on theAmerican Music Fairness Act (AMFA)with country music icon Randy Travis.?During the hearing, “Radio, Music and Copyrights: 100 Years of Inequity for Recording Artists,”?Randy and his wife Maryurged Congressto close a 100-year-old loophole and pass AMFA to make sure artists are FINALLY paid for their songs on AM/FM?radio.?TheNational Association of Broadcasters (NAB)?testified against the bill claiming that they should be able to continue to play songs for free because they "promote" music. ?The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee gave the NAB a chance to acknowledge that they should at least pay something for the music they play, which brings in billions in advertising dollars. Chairman Issa asked, "Is it fair to say that you would be willing to paysomethingto get this problem to go away?" To which the NAB responded, "Mr. Chairman, I would not say that..."?
This is so ridiculous because most musicians get paid incredibly small amounts of money already - Spotify pays about .003 a stream which means if you have 1,000 streams = 3 cents. Surely terrestrial radio can come up with as much as the streaming services do! Any politicians out there willing to work for .003 cents for 3 + minutes of creativity?
